Rob
caught up with Davey Richmond from Glamour Of
The Kill backstage at Birmingham Academy 2 to
talk about their new album 'Savages', their current
tour and much more.
You
are set to release your second full length studio
album ‘Savages’ on the 23d September,
how did you find the whole writing and recording
process this time around?
Davey Richmond Vocal/Bass): It went a lot easier
this time around, we recorded that album in 2009
and then sat on it for 2 years, so that's 5 years
old, we've been waiting since then, we have changed
our style a lot. I've gone a lot more aggressive
with the vocals and we have progressed a lot more
with the band, we made that album when we were
kids you know, since then we have done some big
tours and festivals which has moulded us into
the band we are now, and its reflected into the
songs. As for recording it we worked with a producer
called Joey Sturgis (Asking Alexandria, Of Mice
and Men), after the American tour in November
which was great as he's worked with some great
bands in our genre, it was nice for him to record
with a band that was a bit different to what he's
used to.
What
themes and stories do you cover within ‘Savages’?
With lyrics, we always try to write about cool
subjects, that doesn't relate to us but what others
can relate to when they listen to the songs, there's
a song about drug addiction, missing a loved one,
losing a loved one and even one about having a
great party with your friends, there's something
on this record that someone can relate to, there's
a lot of feel good songs on it.
How
would you say ‘Savages’ compares to
your début album?
I think it's just an example of a band progressing
from experience really, we were kids when we wrote
the first album. This album is faster and it's
more aggressive, and my vocals are a bit more
'Hetfieldy', Mike on the guitar has really stepped
it up, especially with him being in 'Axewound'
it has pushed him to being a better musician.
The
artwork for ‘Savages’ is pretty awesome
who came up with the ideas and final design?
We went through quite a few artists for the final
product, a lot didn't get what we wanted, 'Savages'
is quite an aggressive name, we wanted the cover
to be pretty brutal but really cool, we got in
contact with a few artists but what they came
up with was shite. I got in contact with a guy
called Paul Jackson(Young Guns, Alexisonfire,
Jonny Truant) and he came up with two dogs ripping
a guys face off, it was pretty awesome.
You
are just over half way through your UK tour how
have you found the shows?
It's gone really well, it's always hard when you're
first on, we've been playing to crowds that we
wouldn't normally play to, but all the shows have
sold out, it's cool to be back in the UK and playing
these sold out shows, it's a really cool feeling,
we haven't played in the UK for a year and a half
so its great to play here again.
You
have been touring alongside Motionless In White
and The Defiled how have you found touring with
these bands?
It's been absolutely amazing, I've known the Defiled
guys since the first Sonisphere festival in 2009,
and we have never had a chance to tour with them
guys, and party hard, and Motionless in White
are on the same management as us, so it's been
cool meeting them guys, so I'm enjoying myself.
In
November you are heading out to mainland Europe
to support Papa Roach how did this come about
and how much are you looking forward to these
shows?
We toured with them before in Europe for 9 shows,
and we got on really well with them, Jacoby is
the nicest guy in the world, so we got invited
back out with them, it's gonna be massive venues,
wer'e main support so its gonna be pretty awesome,
they're all such nice guys and I've been a fan
for years since I was in school.
What
do you have planned once the Papa Roach shows
come to an end?
We're just getting things booked up for 2014,
were doing a tour with a big band in the UK and
Europe which I can't say who yet. Then it's going
to be festivals which will soon come around again.
What
would you say your biggest highs and lows as a
band have been so far?
Biggest highs for me is the chance to tour around
the world, we've done it a few times, I've wanted
to go to America since Home Alone 2, ya know the
pigeon lady. Opening Download main stage was mental,
there aren't that many lows, just being away from
family and friends really, and I think early on
in our career, we had a few set backs , my advice
is to take a pinch of salt with everyone as people
can be full of shit and things don't work out
as they should.
Where
do you hope to see Glamour Of The Kill in a year’s
time?
At moment we want to get this album out and tour
it tour it tour it and make sure every one hears
it, I don't want to blow my own trumpet but it
is a fucking cool record. We want to play bigger
venues, tour Australia and Japan, we have a big
following in Japan, we want to make sure that
happens next year.
One
last random question that we ask every band, if
you could be an animal out of a zebra or Giraffe
which one would you be and why?
A Giraffe, you never see them get attacked by
lions do you, when you watch a wildlife program,
you always see a Zebra getting eaten. And you
can see what's coming, and also Chuck Norris Invented
the Giraffe when he uppercut a horse.
Thanks
for your time is there a message for your fans
reading this?
