James
caught up with Derrick Green from Sepultura at
Bloodstock Open Air 2012 to talk about their current
album 'Kairos', playing Bloodstock and much more.
How
did you find the whole writing and recording process
for ‘Kairos’ compared to your previous
albums?
It was great because we were working with Roy
Z; it was the first time working with him, we
heard a lot about him and he’s been trying
to work with the band for a long time. He brought
in a lot of inspiration to capture the energy
that’s put out live onto the CD, so it was
really easy to work with him and as a group I
found we were able to really channel ourselves
to do something we had never done before in terms
of just going forward.
‘Kairos’
is an album that has a concept of time, how did
this idea come about?
Well Andreas came up with the idea of paradoxes,
this time of the God’s it’s called.
We really wanted to do something that was more
personal in terms of Sepultura and the history
of the band so it made sense for us to really
channel the energy from the past and take the
present mixed together to produce a really kick
ass album.
I
know ‘Kairos’
been out for just over a year now but have you
started work on any new material or have any idea
what direction you are going to go in next?
Well yeah, we’re coming to the end of this
touring cycle so we’re flowing ideas around
for the next album, we have a new drummer so it’s
exciting thinking about what we can do next year
with it.
You
have had a lengthy musical career so far with
12 albums being released so far and tours all
over the world with many different bands, but
what you say your main high and low points have
been?
I think some of the high points were things like
Rock In Rio, the feeling playing that festival
being a part of Brazilian history. Another was
doing a show in Cuba, not many bands get to go
over there and play shows so it was a miracle
we got to go over there and play one of the best
show’s we’ve ever done.
You
are currently back in the UK playing Bloodstock
festival, how does it feel to be back in the UK
and playing such a solid metal festival?
It’s great, it’s been a long time
since we’ve been here and we love coming
here playing as many shows as we can but it’s
not easy to fit in all the time. It’s a
good feeling to play a festival here we need to
play it more, we look forward to the set today
and there’s loads of great bands playing.
What
can we expect from your set today?
We have a 45 minute set so we’re going to
try to spread out old and new as equally as we
can, it goes over pretty well because the energy
levels are so high in the songs we’ve picked,
we’ve got the good weather we’ve hoped
for so we’ll get a good power out haha.
Have
you managed to check out any bands at Bloodstock
yet? And will you be hanging around to check out
any?
I haven’t had chance I hope I do, there’s
a lot of bands I’ve not heard of but we’ll
see.
Can
we expect Sepultura to head back to the UK for
a full length tour in the near future?
Not any time soon unfortunately, this is the only
one we’re doing over here then we have a
few shows in Dublin, one in Belfast then that’s
it. Maybe the end of next year after the album’s
finished.
Where
do you hope to see Sepultura in a year’s
time?
Hopefully with a new kickass album, promoting
it on a good tour too haha.
One
last random question that we ask every band, if
you could be an animal out of a zebra or Giraffe
which one would you be and why?
Giraffe. I’ve been a vegetarian for 25 years
so are they so easy one there haha.
Thanks
for your time is there a message for your fans
reading this?
Keep listening to Sepultura, we’ll see
you at the shows.
