Marc
caught up with Night Verses at Hevy festival to
talk to them about the festival, their past and
what they have planned for the future.
Have
you seen many bands this weekend?
Douglas: Yeah, we caught up with a lot of friends
from back home. We've seen some really cool stuff
and we're all big Meshuggah fans so it was nice
seeing them. This Is Hell are a band from New
York that I've known for a long time, and it was
cool to see a bunch of friends, and it's cool
to see a bunch of friends working here that I
haven't seen in a while and what not.
This
is your fifth gig, so were you excited to play
Hevy festival?
Douglas: Yeah it's our fifth gig ever, which is
pretty crazy.
And
the crowd were starting to pack in as the set
went on, we've been around all day and you're
one of the bigger crowds we've seen so far today.
Douglas: Awesome. Yeah it felt really cool to
notice that, you know. I mean it's not like we
were looking for any specific amount of people
we just wanted to play. It's really cool that
people started to come in and see people getting
a vibe of what we doing which is just playing
our hearts out you know.
Aric: It was cool to see people stay too, because
at festivals people wonder off and see everything.
It was just cool to have people stick around and
see the whole set, when they came.
Are
you getting that sort of reception everywhere?
Doughlas: Yeah, this is our fifth show and the
four before have been equally as impressive crowd
reaction wise. It seems everyone's really catching
on to what we want to put out and the first three
shows back home in the states have been pretty
much sold out. It's pretty cool doing it the way
we want to do it and having it work out the way
we want it to work out.
Is
the ep going down well with fans and press? You've
got it available for free download, have many
people signed up?
Douglas: Yeah
Arik: Definitely I mean we kinda just put it out
as a representation of all the stuff were working
on. We're working on a bunch of stuff right now.
We just were kinda curious to see how well it
was received and the fact it's been received and
the fact it's being received as well as it is,
is just awesome. We did our best to try and fit
as much of a range of our sound in the four songs
which is tough considering all of our influences,
but yeah were all happy with it. And we're happy
the reviewer's seem to be getting it.
Does
that mean you're planning on doing a full length
album soon?
Douglas: yeah. We have some stuff in the works
and we've been talking with some people, some
labels and what not. We have a bunch of song that
we want to show people but at the same time we're
keeping them more under wraps, getting people
to come and experience the live show. Then slowly
giving people proper news and letting people know
what we've got going on. We actually have a video
coming out soon for our song Be Happy With Your
Self (I'm Staying Here In Hell) and that comes
out really soon. That's the next piece of the
puzzle. Right now we're focusing on the future
but were doing it very strategically because we
love playing music, and we'll play anywhere but
we also want to do it smart. Let kids work out
what's happening on their own and come in.
Has
that come from your history with The Sleeping
did you have issues there and want to sort it
out early this time round?
Douglas: I think a lot of it came from The Sleeping
but a lot of it also comes from meeting these
dudes. Joining together and ironically without
even meeting having the same exact vibe for what
we want to do. We all came together, we're all
very very appreciative of music, you know, we're
not like trying to do it to impress anyone. We're
not trying to do it for any other reason, we just
love playing music. We met just talking about
bands we loved, and the all of a sudden a year
and a half later we became this band and we all
get what we're doing. It all came so naturally,
I think that's where it came from.
It
really shows on stage, you look like your having
a great time on stage. We're hoping to catch you
later in the tour, are you really excited to be
playing all over the UK? you're playing some smaller
intimate venues like Plymouth White Rabbit so
that could be crazy.
Douglas: Yeah totally. Yeah we were saying we
were stocked for Hevy, but were really stocked
for the headliner too because it's cool. It's
a headliner for our first time here. Either way
whether its big or small we just want to play,
we want to do it on all levels you know. Work
our way up and work our way to where we want to
play.
Aric: We love this, it's awesome to play a venue
as big as this but playing smaller venues I think
we play off of each other more than the audience.
But getting to see the repercussions of that and
getting the audience getting into it with us is
awesome. I feel like you can feel that even more
in a small sweaty room and just have everybody
forced into it. We want the audience to experience
it like we do, whether its in my bedroom, on stage
here or in a tiny venue, we're stoked for wherever
we can play.
You
got anywhere particular in the UK your really
excited to play, anywhere you've Idealised?
Aric: Everybody keeps saying the underworld is
the place to be, I mean he's been to the UK before
but for me it's the first time with a band. So
I'm looking forward to that but this was also
something I was defiantly looking forward to just
cuz this is a different vibe than me Nick or Reilly
have really been into and it's been an awesome
experience.
Douglas: I love Scotland. Scotland's a really
cool place. I've been there a bunch and it's always
a really nice time to hang out and enjoy the sites
and stuff. I'm really stocked for that and London
as well. I'm really stocked for everything in
the sense that this is a new energy and it's a
new unit. I just feel like experiencing this together
early in the game is even more of an inspiration
to go back home and write more, get ready for
more and play together more. We just want to be
able to do this forever.
Where
do you see your selves this time next year? Do
you want to come back and play Hevy?
Douglas: Yeah. We want to do anything honestly.
I wouldn't lie, I wouldn't ever lie to you and
say we don't want to be this entity that everybody
respects and enjoys. We want to reach out to as
many people but our main goal is to play.
Aric: It's kind of hard to pin point because everything
has been cultivating for so long. We've been writing
so much music together and meeting so many people,
we've been playing these awesome shows. It's like
we're kind of trying to organise our plan as we
go. We have more than enough material for a full
length album so we definitely want to do that
in the future but we also want to tour as much
as we can. We're trying to be as smart as we can
about everything.
Would
you rather be a Zebra or a Giraffe and why?
Aric: I like heights so I would be a Giraffe.
I duno I like heights, but I don't want to drop
out of my mum when I'm born which is kinda disgusting.
Douglas: I've never really thought about it.
Aric: I think it's one of the weirdest things
I've ever seen in my life, so I think I'd pick
a zebra so I don't have to fall 10 feet when I'm
born again. I'm assuming I being reincarnated
as Zebra or Giraffe.
Douglas: I think I'd want to be a mountain lion.
Aric: you've got a better one already.
Douglas: Just kind of do my own thing, just kind
of rage out. I'd probably say a mountain lion.
going
off the board.
Douglas: That's defiantly want i want to be, or
an alligator or crocodile.
Aric: That's not fair now.
Douglas: Nah I want to be a mountain lion. I'm
sticking with mountain lion.
