Karlie
headed to Bath and caught up with David, Paul
and Ryan from Dananananaykroyd for a quick chat
about the new album and much more.
Can
you give us a brief history of how you formed
and came up with the band name Dananananaykroyd?
David Roy: We formed on Live Journal, we put up
a post – ‘Does anyone want to be in
a band?’. The first four or five people
that said yes, we went and practised. That was
about 5 years ago now. The band name was a drunken
mistake, we’re a bunch of idiots.
You
released your debut album ‘Hey Everyone’
in April 2009, did it go down as well with the
fans and the press as you were expecting?
Paul: Yeah, even better than we were expecting,
it really set us up. It’s amazing when you’ve
got kids singing along to your songs and they
know the words.
David: I think when you’re called Dananananaykroyd
you’re not really expecting that much. We
got to tour all over the world with that album
so it was much higher than our expectations as
well.
I
understand you
have been working with Ross Robinson on your new
album, how have you found working with him?
David: An absolute delight. It was all through
our management, they managed to convince him
that we were a good band. We went to his own
studio in Las Vegas for a month and had an incredible
experience. You can’t describe it in words
without sounding like a hippy. It was hard work
and it was fun
Paul: It was a real detachment from the real world
that we needed. We basically got to sit in the
sunshine in our sunglasses in winter time. You
can’t go to Vegas and come back a bad person.
We just felt better about ourselves after a terrible
year and we got a good record out of it.
Can
you give us more details on the new album; such
as the title, when you expect to release it and
most importantly what can people expect from it?
David: Comes out end of May, early June. We’ll
be releasing the title soon. It’s an absolute
fireball of a record but it’s got a lot
of catchy riffs, sing a longs, encapsulating
anger that has come out as positive rays of
sunshine.
You’ve
been giving away your new track ‘E Numbers’
as a free download on your Facebook page, how
successful has this been so far?
David: Well it only went up on Friday, it’s
only a taster. It’s already been played
on Radio One. It’s had over four thousand
plays so it’s getting there. It’s
the first opportunity we’ve had to get
a new song out in over 2 years so we just got
it out there.
You
are currently on your first tour of the new year
with Kid Adrift, how has this been so far?
Paul: It’s been fun, it’s so good
to be back on the road. It’s great for every
band but especially for us because that’s
why you form a band. Really looking forward to
tonight, Bath is always a riot.
What
do you have planned when the tour comes to an
end on Saturday?
David: It’s back home for a little while
Ryan. I think I’m going to be sitting around
in my pants quite a lot.
David: We’ll be making our first video
from the album, so that’ll be in the next
couple of months. We’re not going to be
playing as much as we used to, so there’ll
be a lot of sitting about, saving money.
Where
do you hope to see Dananananaykroyd in a year’s
time?
Ryan: Hopefully touring America, we’ll hopefully
be doing an album headline tour here in bigger
venues, and hopefully they’ll be full, and
we’ll not be playing to 15 people.
One
last random question that we ask every band, if
you could be an animal out of a zebra or a giraffe,
which one would you be and why?
Paul: Well giraffes can do that thing where
they can eat all the top branches and they look
all snide about it
Ryan: If you were a giraffe you could just fellate
yourself. I don’t trust giraffes.
David: I’s like to be a zebra because
I wouldn’t want all the attention drawn
to my stupidly long neck. I’d be camouflaged
on a chess board. We’d all be zebras,
except for Paul because he’s a pelican.
Thank
you for your time, have you got a message for
your fans reading this?
Bassist: Be nice to each other.
David: Be bad ass. Don’t lie, treat others
as you would like to be treated, and be positive,
and rock out as hard as you can without hurting
anyone there.
Ryan: And stay in school, it’s actually
really important.
David: (to the batman theme tune) Dananananananananaykroyd!
