We
were due to intevriew Sunday Girl back stage at
the Academy in Bristol before her support slot
on the Ellie Goulding tour but due to soundcheck
getting in the way we did the interview via e-mail,
You
are named Sunday Girl after an old job can you
tell us more about this?
I worked in my local old fashioned pet shop for
years when I was younger, I worked at weekends
and no one knew my name so I got called the "sunday
girl" I love how the name is quite anonymous.
I used to bring so many pets home, my poor mum.
I had 13 animals at one point!!
Do
a lot of people originally think that you are
named after the Blondie song of the same name?
Yea they do and I do love that song but the pet
shop girl is the real story
At
what stage did you decide you wanted to create
your own music after playing in cover bands?
I had always written poetry and scribbled down
words and tried to write with the bands I was
in but always found it very hard so once I got
management I got writing with proper song writers.
The process was a lot easier then and I could
write exactly what I wanted
who
would you say your main musical influences are?
Mazzy star, saint Etienne, joy division, gold
frapp, kelis, peggy lee
I
understand your
debut album is already written, when are you planning
to release it and what can we expect from it?
The album is out in March, it’s mainly written
by myself and Jim Elliot who has written singles
for Kylie. It’s pop but quite dark at times
with loads of layers of sound and vocals, quite
ethereal and washy. A real wall of sound!
The
video for your latest single ‘Stop Hey’
is really impressive with a lot going on what
was it like to make?
I love shooting videos and love the process and
organisation that goes into it. I meet up with
the director to discuss themes and for this video
we went with the idea of superstition which I
love but am very scared off, so walking under
ladders was my worst night mare! But it looked
great. It was also inspired by the photographer
Tim Walker who was a great inspiration to me while
I was doing my set design degree and university.
When
is ‘Stop Hey’ being released as a
single?
Its out in January, I’m scared but excited
I
understand you
played Cardiff Friday night and then dashed off
to play an acoustic set for Diesel, how did you
find playing two sets in two days?
2 sets in one day is hard but I think this sort
of thing will only become more and more usual.
Ellie often dashes off to do other shows after
her shows but I think it’s about building
up your voice so it can cope and catching as much
sleep as you can as that really affects my voice
when I’m tired.
You
have a bit of a live show tradition at the moment
where you take a photo of the crowd and post it
on your Facebook when did this idea come about
and do you have a lot of response from your fans
identifying themselves in the pictures?
after a few shows in I wanted to get the crowd
involved more so I started giving away free t
shirt to whoever I say singing the loudest to
certain parts of one of my songs and then I just
thought let’s take pictures! everyone loved
facebook and to have yourself tagged in a crowd
pic seemed a fun idea and people seem to be loving
it so I’m pleased I did it
What
do you do whilst on tour in-between shows to keep
busy?
iv been doing a lot of knitting and drawing. Also
reading and going out with my band on little adventures,
we have been on some country walks and go karting.
Horse riding was on the cards but my management
got a bit scared there might be some broken arms
so we kept clear
Are
you looking forward to playing any shows more
than others?
every show is different so it doesn’t get
boring but it’s always fun when my friends
or family turn up to some shows
How
does it feel to be tipped as one of the best artists
to watch from many huge publications?
It hasn’t sunk in to be honest! it’s
amazing but it doesn’t mean I’m safe
yet, still lots of work to do
MySpace
seems to be a big tool in the music industry these
days with artists communicating with their fans
over it and some even ditching their own website
and having just a MySpace site, what are your
opinions on MySpace as a tool in the music industry?
I think MySpace is good for people to listen to
music but I prefer facebook and twitter for talking
to fans, as you can upload pictures and respond
easily to people. I think it’s great to
chat to fans and see what they are liking
Where
would you like to see yourself this time next
year?
I want to be loving what I’m doing, having
loads of fun and hopefully the single does well
and I’m making progress
One
last random question that we ask every band, if
you could be an animal out of a Zebra and a Giraffe
which one would you be and why?
Well giraffes have the best eye lashes I have
ever seen but zebras are very beautiful and I
would love one as a pet but I think I would like
to be a giraffe
