When
I first got asked to photograph Natives, I had
no clue who they were, so I searched them on the
internet and started looking through some of their
band photos. I soon realised that I had already
photographed them years ago before when they supported
Canterbury on tour, they were the same people
in the band but under a different name, then found
out they changed their name which was very confusing
for my small brain. As I've photographed these
guys before I thought great I know what I'm expecting
and started to get excited as the date got nearer,
finally it was time, I headed
to The O2 Academy in Birmingham, where i was expecting
a great turn out, unfortunately there was no more
than 20 people there for some strange reason which
was pretty disappointing but i thought it was
only the start of the night so there was still
time for more people to turn up.
Natives are a great young, up and coming band
from The New Forest who changed their name from
Not Advised in 2012 because they wanted to head
in a whole new and different direction with their
band and music.
The
bands they brought on this tour with them were
Arches and Bleach Blood, who were both pretty
good and were fresh young faces to the Indie /
rock music scene, well for me any way, but both
were really enjoyable and were great support bands.
As Bleach Blood walked off stage at the end of
their set I was still expecting the academy floor
to fill out more but disappointingly it just stayed
the same as the 20 odd people that I counted at
the start of the night which I found very sad
and annoying because as I said, Natives are a
great band that work really hard and in my eyes
deserve more. They kicked things off with the
song
'The Horizon' which is the 9th track on their
brand new album called 'Indoor War' which was
out on March 14th 2014 so not long before this
headline tour. The rock/pop band put great effort
into this gig trying so hard to try and win the
crowd over but didn't have an luck at all, lead
singer, Jim even told every one from the back
to come forward and party with them but still
nothing it's like the crowd were scared of them
or something, it was really strange.
Half
way through one of their songs they all picked
up a different drumming kind of instrument and
all taped away in sync, it almost sounded like
I was in a jungle but the crowd seemed to enjoy
it and I did also because it was different, you
don't really see many bands do this so it was
great to watch and the way they made it sound
so in sync with each other was amazing. I really
enjoyed watching this band but think they deserve
a bigger fan base that follow them around when
they on tour, I rate the performance 4/5.
Natives 4/5
