You’re never quite sure what to expect when you enter a venue not
much larger than your back garden. The result is either going to be unbearably
average or a pretty special experience given the surroundings are so intimate.
So I was more than happy when Twin Atlantic came on stage. More than anything,
the four Glasweigan lads looked happy to be there, which seemed to bounce
back off of the audience. Granted, the audience was not the biggest, but
the first five rows of people were engrossed and a select few even decided
to move to the music.
Having never heard a song by Twin Atlantic before, I wasn’t sure
what to expect. But from the moment they launch into ‘I Cave In’,
right through to ‘Time Is The Enemy’, the band’s songs
have haunting, slow melodies (one song even features a session on the
cello from Barry McKenna) interspersed with high octane, hyper-energetic
riffs. The transition from one to the other had me hooked, constantly
waiting for the bigger sound to kick in. Lead singer and guitarist Sam
McTrusty (lead vocals and guitarist) was a big charmer of the crowd and
ensured he spoke to the audience between every song, even giving impromptu
renditions of random songs in between their own, including ‘If I
Had a Hammer’. The other members of the band remain silent for the
entire set but it doesn’t stop them exuding the same level of energy
as the front man.
When the band played a song called ‘Audience and Audio’ and
McTrusty cries “is anybody out there?” his Glasweigan accent
shines right through, which left me making a connection to their country
brothers, Biffy Clyro. But although they are not quite up to the same
calibre of music as Biffy, the band had something that I think could take
them a long way given time. What with their Scottish charm, the huge grins
on their faces and songs which impact on your emotion, you can’t
help but smile when you’re watching them. And hey, a cellist in
the band too? That’s just an added bonus.
3/5
