When Katy Perry announced her March/April 2011
tour back towards the end of 2010 the tickets
sold out within hours which then prompted her
to announce a further tour for October and November
at much bigger venues such as the massive O2 Arena
in London with tickets pretty much sold out now
and for the shows that are still on sale they
will be sold out within minutes of people getting
back from her current California Dreams tour which
is bound to go down in the history books as one
of the best female solo artist tours ever.
When we got to the Hammersmith Apollo, the first
thing I noticed was that the venue smelled all
nice like candy floss and sweet shops which mirrors
the effect of the current Katy Perry album ‘Teenage
Dreams’ which smells very similar, we headed
straight into the main arena and watched the last
few minutes of the DJ and whilst doing that I
took some time to analyse the crowd and there
was such a nice positive mix of people from teenage
girls to couples in their 20’s and 30’s
to middle age mums and dads and everyone was waiting
so patently for Katy Perry to come on.
Moments later the curtain dropped to reveal a
very beautiful looking Alice In Wonderland meets
Charlie And The Chocolate Factory style bright
candy land with three massive screens hanging
in the air, this followed with a short video which
featured crazy butchers, cats, dodgy cakes and
a quest for a baker boy, as soon as the video
finished Katy Perry appeared at the back of the
stage high up in the air stood on a platform in
a frilly colourful dress with a heart shaped front
and straight away she blasted into ‘Teenage
Dreams’ and made her way to the front of
the stage, the song featured complex dance routines
with a flurry of backing dancers and the whole
brightness of the stage and clothing let off a
massive happy vibe.
The set featured 21 songs with a couple of acoustic
covers thrown into the mix such as Willow Smith’s
‘I Whip My Hair’, Lady Gaga’s
‘Born This Way’, Rhianna’s ‘Only
Girl In The World’ and not to forget the
massive sing-a-long full electronic version of
Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With
Somebody’ which went down extremely well.
Of her own hits Katy Perry played a big mixture
from both albums but the highlights for myself
were ‘Waking Up In Vegas’ because
the song is so beautiful, ‘Peacock’
because the performance went down well with Katy
and the rest of the on stage crew having feathers
attached to them to look like peacocks, and also
the ballad ‘Not Like The Movies’ which
featured Katy sitting on a swing which lifted
her up in the air and back down whilst cartoon
movie characters get projected next to her like
Mickey Mouse etc.
During the set Katy Perry was in her element
changing her outfit nearly 20 times and I have
to say the way she did it was fantastic as some
of the outfit changes happened on stage and was
like a scene out of a Paul Daniels magic show
with Katy running through a screen and within
the second it took her to do so she had a different
dress on, her outfits were all colourful and wacky
looking with the big cupcake dress getting the
best reaction.
Katy Perry made a lot of effort to talk to her
fans during the show and revealed her love for
The Only Way Is Essex and My Big Fat Gipsy Wedding,
she also brought some fans out of the crowd and
on to the stage towards the end of the set and
one fan even featured a banner saying “I
would turn lesbian for Katy Perry” which
just shows how dedicated her fans are.
The show came to an end with the fantastic ‘California
Girls’ which featured a massive sing-a-long
from everyone in the venue and the on stage antics
were fantastic with dancing ginger bread men and
confetti galore and helped finished the show in
the best possible way.
Overall tonight’s show proved that Katy
Perry is at the top of her game and right up there
with the other heavy weight female solo artists
such as Lady Gaga, Madonna, Kylie etc, the stage
show was epic, the song choices were great and
Katy Perry’s overall performance was fantastic
and at the same time Katy helped her fans to live
in their perfect world for a good 1hour and 40minutes.
5/5
