Tonight was my first ever venture to the Cliffs
Pavilion venue in Southend which happens to be
a long running family friendly venue which hosts
a variety of pantomimes, shows and family friendly
bands such as Madness, Blondie and many other
mainstream artists but tonight we were at the
venue to see The Saturdays embark on their biggest
ever UK tour.
The first band on tonight were the ever so young
and cheeky threesome Twenty Twenty who have been
together for a couple of years now and managed
to play many headline shows selling out the Academy
sized venues across the country without any record
label backing but back in January these guys snapped
up by Geffen records and moments later got added
to new label mates The Saturdays tour.
Twenty Twenty took to the stage for a short 25minute
set and from the start of the set they proved
to be a huge success getting the female dominated
crowd screaming and clapping along bearing in
mind that for the majority of the crowd tonight
it was the first time they had ever set eyes on
Twenty Twenty, the band carried out a lot of banter
between songs and interacted with the crowd at
every opportunity with drummer Sonny taking a
crowd photo on his mobile to instantly upload
to facebook after the set for their new found
fans to tag themselves and not to mention half
way through there set telling the crowd that they
will be out by the merch after the show to sign
things which got an massively positive response.
The music that Twenty Twenty played sounding
extremely tight, like a band that has been busy
working the live scene for some time now which
is exactly what Twenty Twenty have been doing,
the highlights of the set were ‘Worlds Apart’,
‘Get Down’ and the brand new single
‘Love To Life’, the only downside
about Twenty Twenty’s set was that the stage
was far too big for this three piece as they were
so spread out but managed to cover it in a good
way.
The second support band was Six-D who are a 6-piece
pop dance group who take the best elements of
pop and dance and merge it together for a massive
party atmosphere, they are made up of street dancing
champion Levon De Silva as well as Kieran Edmonds,
Cassie MacMillan, Chantelle Bernard, Pierre Angus
and Kimmy Campbell, the dance moves that Six-D
pulled off was really impressive but I was a little
less impressed with the singing as everything
was being mimed, now I understand mixing such
extreme dancing and singing together can be tough
but if you can’t do it then you seriously
need to re think your act as in my opinion this
was the most cheesiest 30minutes of my life.
Next up was the band that everyone had been waiting
for The Saturdays, they were due to take to the
stage at 8.45pm but before this happened we had
to endure the Duck Sauce ‘Barbra Streisand’
track but instead of vocals of “Barbra Streisand”,
it was full of shout outs to various different
fans of The Saturdays which was met from with
loud screams from the crowd depending on which
name was called out at which point and it added
a nice personal touch for some of the fans.
Moments later the curtain came down and the big
screen came to life with photos and paper covers
featuring the members of The Saturdays appearing
on the screen, seconds later The Saturdays started
to appear raising up on a lift type moving platform
and blasted straight into the very appropriate
opening track ‘Higher’, for the first
half of ‘Higher’ The Saturdays spend
their time up on the top platform but half way
through they made their way down the stairs to
finish off the song on the main stage whilst then
talking time to talk to the crowd to explain that
Mollie is currently ill and her DR has ordered
her to rest and it was either the choice of playing
without Rochelle or pulling the show altogether.
The Saturdays looked fab in the way that they
were wearing figure hugging dresses and had perfect
hair and makeup and not to forgot powerful vocals
and well thought out dance routines to go with
it, the whole stage set up was well designed with
the backing band situated to the bottom section
of the stage hiding out in little open spaced
huts whilst The Saturdays took the majority of
the limelight.
The set featured a number of costume changes
like you would expect from any pop concert, it
also featured many stage props such as bright
coloured balloons and not to forget ribbons to
resemble puppets on a string during the classic
song ‘Puppet’ and also during ‘Died
In Your Eyes’ Una showed off her skills
with the acoustic guitar whilst the rest of the
band chipped in to nail this beautiful ballad.
One of the highlights from the set was when The
Saturdays preformed a medley of Rihanna songs
which featured ‘LoveThe Way You Lie 2’
and ‘Whats My Name’, this were covered
so well and went down extremely well with the
crowd, this was followed on by ‘If This
Is Love’ and the fantastic ‘Issues’
which both feature on the band’s debut album
‘Chasing The Light’.
The songs featured during the set was like a
big greatest hits with all of the bands hit singles
being played but at the same time there was many
album tracks played that have never been released
as a single before and they seemed to go down
just as well as the singles did which proved tonights
crowd was made up of very hardcore fans.
Despite being one girl down, The Saturdays came
out and gave it their all from the opening moments
of ‘Higher’ right until the final
goodbyes after the closing track ‘Ego’,
The Saturdays Ooze with talent and tonights show
proved just that.
Twenty Twenty - 4/5
Six-D – 1/5
The Saturdays - 5/5
