As
I walked in the support band ‘’What
Now’’ were halfway through their set.
The crowd was sparse, in this incredibly intimate
venue, and the only movement was a minimal foot-tapping.
They had some good vocals from the Bassist/Lead
singer but unfortunately their effort was spoilt
by the guitarist’s wailing. The Xcerts deserved
a better warm-up than this, although they were
friendly to the crowd that had bothered to watch
them.
The Xcerts began their set with a lively tune,
luckily the crowd size had increased dramatically
and their efforts weren’t going un-appreciated.
The crowd had livened up, they were cheering and
some singing along, especially to (ooo oo oo).
As they progressed through their set they maintained
their energy, and really captured the crowd’s
attention. Half way through their set Murray (Lead)
had asked if anyone had seen them before, this
resulted in some funny heckling. As this continued
the crowd laughed, and after further banter Murray
had stated that ‘’Drugs are sick,
and not in the good way kids. Get marijuana high,
not ecstasy high’’, and we all laughed.
They quickly picked up the pace again and the
crowd soon returned to singing at the band and
bopping away.
As their set continued they played some fantastic
instrumentals, and not a note seemed out of place.
As the end drew near the bassist and drummer walked
off the stage without a word being said, Murray
then sang ‘Aberdeen 1987’ absolutely
beautifully. The crowd were still and gazed at
this passionate acoustic with awe. This seemed
such an alternative yet captivating way to end
their set, ending on a mellow note as opposed
to leaving the stage on a high was entrancing.
The crowd all applauded too early and almost ruined
the moment, but Murray has such a charm about
him and quickly turned this into yet more friendly
relations. Murray walked off and everyone in the
room chanted for more from this brilliant 3 piece.
After checking they had time, they played one
more song and got the atmosphere back to the vivacious
show we had previously viewed.
After the gig I was lucky enough to have a quick
chat with bassist Jordan Smith, and he was possibly
the most humble guy I have ever met. Overall this
was an enchanting performance and full of charisma,
these boys will go far with their raw talent.
The Xcerts - 4/5
