Teenage Bottlerocket may have been around since
2001 but in the UK they have been pretty unheard
of until earlier on in the year when they got snapped
up by Fat mike’s Fat wreck Chords who have
now released the bands forth studio album ‘They
Came From The Shadows’ which could well be
my album of the year at the end of 2009 as everything
about Teenage Bottlerocket and their new album is
right up my street.
The album starts with ‘Skate Or Die’
a song that takes me back to my teenage years
when the skate punk scene was in and everyone
had Mohawks, loved skating and loved fast paced
catchy punk music, sadly the scene died out when
the emo scene became the new cool and skate punk
has been pretty non-existent since then but Teenage
Bottlerocket are here to help make the scene live
on, ‘Skate Or Die’ is fast, fun and
everything that punk rock should be, it has powerfull
punk style guitar riffs and features lyrics that
many old skateboarders can relate to with frontman
Ray Carlisle singing “Don’t be a pussy
there’s no need to cry, so shut up and get
rad, cuz now it’s time to skate or die’.
‘Don’t Want To Go’ reminds
me of The Ramones and my favourite ever skate
punk band the 4FT Fingers, the song is extremely
fast paced and features big chant-a-long vocals
with lyrics of “I don’t wanna go o
o o o”.
‘Bigger Than Kiss’ is a tongue in
cheek song that will make you laugh as it is a
song that is about the Detroit city make up wearing
men who think they are cool, the song is another
fast paced fun track and features hilarious lyrics
such as “Detroit couldn't rock itself out
of a paper bag, Gene Simmons looks kinda cool
But Paul Stanley kinda looks like a jag, Ace Frehley
can play guitar But he ain't no fucking Kerry
King, So get your ass out of the way Here comes
a rock revolution”.
My favorite track on the album is ‘Skate
Or Die’ mainly for the reason that the song
brings me back to my roots and rewinds me back
ten years or so when the music scene was at its
best, another track that really stands out to
me is ‘Not OK’, the song is a good
sing-a-long track where the instrumental work
features everything that’s good about punk
rock, and the last track that stands out for me
is ‘Fatso Goes Nutzoid’ mainly because
the song actually is nuts and crammed with fast
paced guitar riffs and melodic vocals.
‘They Came From The Shadows’ features
14 tracks that run for around 2 minutes each on
average which means that the album runs for just
over 30 minutes which is just about right for
a punk rock album, if you like your punk rock
fast and straight to the point then ‘They
Came From The Shadows’ is the album for
you, Teenage Bottlerocket deserve to be massive
even though they are just happy to be in a band
playing punk rock, I really hope the guys head
over to the UK really soon as I will be there.
5/5
