I have heard a lot about Blackhole over the past
year, or should I say that I have heard the band
name a lot over the past year as it seems that every
time the Gallows go on tour Blackhole are there
supporting them and if they are not supporting the
Gallows then they are supporting various different
bands in the hardcore scene, a lot of attention
from people has been put on the band as frontman
Richard Carter is the brother of Frank and Steph
Carter from the Gallows who are pretty much the
superstars of hardcore punk rock these days.
Blackhole have just released their debut album
‘Dead Hearts’ on Search And Destroy
Records and it is now their chance to show everyone
that they are not a band who want to be the Gallows
and that they have their own individual style
and rock as hard as any other band in the hardcore
scene today and after hearing the album a couple
of times through myself I am sure Blackhole are
going to gain a massive fanbase in no time.
‘Dead Hearts’ is fast and frantic
from the opening drum beat of ‘Don’t
Cry’ right to the concluding dark vocals
of ‘We Are The Dead Hearts’ and it
is such a fun listen in the way that everything
has been put together so perfect and comes across
in such an aggressive yet catchy way.
The opening track ‘Don’t Cry’
is fantastic with the way that it starts off with
frantic drum beats and a powerful set of guitar
riffs that come charging at you at 100 miles per
hour and if that isn’t enough to get you
excited just wait until seconds later when Richard
Carter’s ferocious high charged vocals come
in taking the song on a melodic yet heavy short
journey.
Richard Carter does have a decent set of vocals,
they come across so fast and raw sounding whilst
also picking up a melodic pace that is catchy
but stays so far away from being poppy but it
gives Blackhole the catchy edge that they really
need to stand out, now Richard Carter’s
vocals are one thing but the guitar riffs on offer
throughout the album are something else, these
guys have defiantly been to the school of rock
to learn guitar as the riffs are so catchy with
some outstanding solo’s and unpredictable
fast moments, just listen to the opening moments
of ‘If Only’ to get a true taste of
Blackhole’s guitar riffs at their best.
Like mentioned above there are so many great
tracks on the album but my favourites have to
be ‘Witches’ which starts with that
classic Blackhole riffage that you will never
forget, ‘Forever’ is also great especially
when Richard Carter explodes with his raw vocals,
and ‘My Lord’ starts off sounding
a bit like The Darkness before then going off
in its own raw yet catchy direction.
For a debut album ‘Dead Hearts’ is
pretty fantastic, and it has the potential to
the same as what the Gallows and The Ghost Of
A Thousands debut album did for them and catapult
them into the major league of the hardcore scene,
only time will tell but things are certainly looking
good for these guys.
