Rat Attack are a 4 piece hardcore punk band from
Exeter who have been together for two years now,
they have spent their fair share of time on the
road touring across Europe with H20, Madball, Crime
In Stereo, The Ghost Of A Thousand and many other
hard-hitting bands from the hardcore punk scene.
The shear brutal-ness of Rat Attack is enough
to please any fan of the hardcore music scene,
if you like bands like The Gallows, The Ghost
Of A Thousand and Madball then you are going to
love Rat Attack as they have a combined sound
of all these bands mixed together, with their
own brutal edge shining through.
The bands new EP ‘This Is Art’ is
due for release on the 21st September, the EP
is a big fast and furious release, it features
6 tracks and runs for just over 15 minutes, but
each and every second of the EP is quality, it
has the same churning riffs and explosive drum
beats as The Ghost Of A Thousand and overall sounds
like a more melodic version of the Gallows in
the way that it is catchy without being to poppy.
‘This Is Art’ opens up with ‘The
Southern Lights’ the song runs for 2minutes
and 42 seconds and packs a big punch, it starts
with Charlie Gaskin knocking out some explosive
guitar riffs as James Falvell’s drum beats
are constantly heard in the background, seconds
later Drew Amesbury comes in with his fast flowing
vocals that change from being raw sounding to
melodic within seconds and back again, group vocals
also come and go throughout the song and when
they come in they give the song that little bit
more of a raw edge.
‘I still Function’ has a fantastic
instrumental opening, with the guitar riffs charging
at you at 100 miles per hour before the music
suddenly coming to a near standstill whilst Drew
Amesbury prepares himself to let rip with his
aggressive yet catchy vocals.
The EP title track ‘This Is Art’
is without a doubt the best bit of music on the
EP instrumentally, the song only runs for 1minute
and 25 seconds but the song sounds massive and
equally aggressive, the guitar riffs are fully
charged and kick major arse, Drew’s vocals
are angrier than ever, Dan Wilson’s bassline
is bouncy as fuck and a lot of fun, whilst overall
the song is massive but sadly ends before you
know it.
‘Forced Smile’ closes the EP and
the song is the longest running track on the EP
running for nearly 4 minutes and it is also a
mixed track that has some big melodic moment but
equally has some proper angry moments, it’s
a big mix but it is the perfect track to listen
to just to check out both sides of Rat Attacks
musical style, think of the more melodic songs
by the Gallows and you will have some kind of
idea of what ‘Forced smile’ is all
about.
Overall ‘This Is Art’ is a solid
release from Rat Attack, a release that should
see them rise out of the underground scene and
see them touring nationwide supporting a wide
range of high-profile bands from the same scene,
I personally can’t wait to see Rat Attack
on the live circuit as I am sure they have one
hell of an explosive live show.
