Goto.Berlin are a four piece indie rock band from
Bucharest, Romania, they formed during the later
part of 2007 and are now ready to release their
debut EP ‘Just A Band’, the EP features
5 tracks and runs for just under 18 minutes and
is the first bit of indie music that I have heard
come out of Romania and I have to say that it is
a pretty good debut release.
The EP starts with ‘Brothers And Sister’s’,
which starts off with some really eerie sounding
soundscapes, luckily that lasts only for seconds
and then the drums, guitar and bass come in creating
a really bouncy noise and catchy vibe, Robert
Lama’s vocals also come in pretty much at
the same time and they are really clear and sound
all so perfect in the way that they are not chilled
sounding, not loud sounding, not raw sounding,
not melodic sounding, they are just slap bang
in the middle and sound really strong. The chorus
of the song flows really well, you will finding
yourself humming along as Robert sings “I
never care about your boyfriend, you shouldn’t
care about my girlfriend” and then the more
you listen to the song you will slowly find yourself
picking up the words and singing along.
‘Call Of Duty’ is instrumentally
a top song as Goto.Berlin have a way with their
instruments, everything they play is so clean
and perfect sounding, you will not find bouncier
basslines or rockier indie style guitar riffs
than what these guys have here.
‘Cheap Friend’ takes a bit of a Coldplay
meets Radiohead approach, with the way that the
song is really stripped down, the song really
gives Robert a chance to shine with his vocals
and that is exactly what he does with his softly
spoken vocals, the song builds up from minimal
sound to a near rocking explosion within 2minutes
but just as the song starts to get heavy and is
about to tip over the edge it takes two steps
back to the more chilled out sound and starts
to build up again and again.
The strongest sounding track on the EP is ‘My
Time’ the song is a really big poppy sing-a-long
affair that is full of catchy hooks and has radio
friendly written all over it, the song builds
up well but it is the upbeat chorus where the
song really shines with Robert singing in a way
that we are yet to hear on the EP.
Goto.Berlin are an indie band well worth checking
out, their debut EP features 5 strong tracks that
sound so different from each other, there is enough
variation within the EP to keep everyone happy
and I am sure you won’t want this EP leaving
your CD player for some time, I for one am proud
to have ‘Just A Band’ in my CD collection.
4/5
