I remember reviewing an EP by Death Before Dishonor
a few years ago called ‘Friends, Family, Forever’
and I really wasn’t impressed with it as it
just sounded like the same old hardcore music that
you have heard many times before but from bands
who are at the top of their game in the scene such
as Hatebreed and Blood For Blood.
Well Death Before Dishonor are now back with
their third studio album ‘Better Ways To
Die’ and I have to say that the album is
a big improvement on the EP they released a couple
of years ago, the album features 11 tracks and
runs for 24 minutes which means that each track
runs for just over two minutes on average which
is just about the right amount of time for a band
that creates brutal sounding hardcore songs.
Before you give ‘Better Ways To Die’
a listen I would advise you to get a couple of
headache tablets at the ready as the album is
proper heavy and brutal sounding and will either
leave you having a headache just from the sheer
brutal sound of the album or you will be left
with a headache after accidentally smashing your
head against your bedroom wall after going nuts
bouncing of the walls doing your best scream impression
alongside the vocals of front man Bryan.
The album starts off with a song called ‘Peace
And Quiet’ and the song is quite the opposite,
it starts off with a massive thrash metal style
guitar riffs, something that wouldn’t be
to out of place on a Children Of Bodom album,
and then suddenly Bryan’s vocals come in
charging at you at a force of 1000 Miles Per Hour,
the song only runs for 1minute and 15 seconds
but it leaves a massive impact and lets you know
that Death Before Dishonor are not fucking about
this time and that they are here to make a massive
impact on anything that gets in their way and
anyone that decides to listen to them.
‘Remember’ starts off very odd for
a hardcore song, with a mid-tempo instrumental
piece but within 20 seconds the song reaches it’s
hardcore peak with massive aggressive sounding
group vocals and an overall catchy instrumental
groove which gives me the feeling that Death Before
Dishonor have scrapped their orginal formula and
gone for the experimental route this time around.
Songs like ‘Coffin Nail’, ‘Fuck
This Year’ and the album title track ‘Better
Ways To Die’ are Death Before Dishonor at
their hardcore best; the songs are both fast and
furious with really aggressive vocals and a power
that should leave you feeling very battered and
bruised.
‘Better Ways To Die’ is everything
that ‘Friends, Family’ Forever’
wasn’t , the album is very experimental
with Death Before Dishonor trying things different
this time around but still maintaining their hardcore
tag, vocalist Bryan Harris has gone up in my estimations
with his vocals sounding so much better this time
around and the overall instrumental work from
the band is fantastic with moments that you would
just not expect from an hardcore record, this
is Death Before Dishonor at their best doing good
things for the hardcore music scene.
