“Once Upon A Time” starts off the EP, and straight away you're
launched into an upbeat 'happy' riff, and into the verse. And that's where
it all goes a bit strange. Well, not strange as such, just different. Considering
the uplifting musical backing, the monotone unexciting vocals really don't
do the rest of the band justice. A seriously dull vocal line that would
be better suited to some iffy eighties new romantic cover band, and not
a 21st century indie band.
The Boyfriends are really easy listening, possibly the most inoffensive
indie band in the history of time. Not even a smidge of anger. The kind
of music you could find on the opening credits to a low budget comedy-drama
on Channel 4.
Imagine Blur. And if Graham Coxon had got his own way a bit more. So
the slow droney songs, but with a slightly Damon Albarne-esque voice.
You've got the idea.
“Apathy In The UK” is the third and final track on the EP,
and it seems these guys never heard of 'going out with a bang.' Not only
is it slow and quite depressing, it doesn't get anywhere, and after two
and a half minutes, it ends when you're just praying it's going to do
something.
The Boyfriends aren't a group I can see taking the UK by storm, but I
guess they aren't bad. They're not the most exciting group in the world,
but they're not outrageous and noisy. A modern indie band for the 'older
customer.
3/5
