Solo electronic act Dan Black is here to deliver
his latest single
“Symphonies” after his performance at
Glastonbury. After his
breakthrough single, which mashed up Notorious BIG's
Hypnotize and
Rihanna's Umbrella, Black is going strong, although
it does sound like
he's recycled the Umbrella drum-beat for this latest
single. At first,
something said Beyoncé, but alas, the penny
drops, and it's Rihanna's
hit he's nicked it from.
Aside from the stolen drumbeat, the song features
Dan Black's solo
tuneful vocal, and a lead string line, which may
or may not have been
stolen from somewhere. It's a light-hearted release
that is fairly hard
to fault, and I can already forsee kids playing
it from their mobile
phones on buses nationwide.
It's a bit weak for my liking, there's not enough
bass or oomph, but
it's perfectly musical and I can see it going
down very well in the
current musical climate.
3.5/5
