Street Sweeper Social Club are an extremely well-known
duo from the
States: the rapper and front-man of The Coup, Boots
Riley, and Tom
Morello, the critically acclaimed guitarist from
Audioslave and Rage
Against The Machine.
After a disappointing release last year from Morello's
solo
Nightwatchman project, this was going to be an
interesting listen. But,
thank the Lord, whoever he is, this is prime time.
For those of you who miss Rage and Audioslave
massively, this is for
you. Musically, for the most part, this is a perfect
blend of Rage and
Audioslave riffs, with the memorable Morello tone.
However the vocals of
Boots Riley, are much more your generic hip-hop
rap vocals, as opposed
to De La Rocha's squeaky shrieks, or Cornell's...
Well I don't know what
to call it, but his solo stuff is fairly poor.
I'm surprised this hasn't been done sooner though,
Rage's break-up was
just begging for a modern replacement, and here
we have it. The opening
tracks “Fight! Smash! Win!” and “100
Little Curses” are phenominal, and
certainly album highlights.
Do you ever find yourself listening to the Rage
discography and wonder
how, with the same guitar tone, Morello could
write so many different
riffs whilst still retaining a general sense of
brilliance? They all
seem to have an overwhelming sense of both rock
and funk, and you'll be
angrily grooving eternally. Well, he's rustled
up another eleven
mind-blowing head-thrashing body-twisting licks,
would you believe.
But let's not forget Boots Riley, his rapping
style lends itself
perfectly to Morello's music. In fact it's the
kind of voice that could
lend itself to any music. And the lyrics aren't
bad either.
All in all, a fantastic release. Massively impressive
and certainly
worth a listen.
4.5/5
