Kill Casino are a three piece alternative punk rock
band they are made up of Karen Luan (Vocals, Bass),
Chris Ryan (Guitar) and Paul-Luc Gifford (drums),
the band have just completed a small tour supporting
Me First And The Gimme Gimme’s in the UK which
can only be a good thing for Kill Casino as Me First
And The Gimme Gimme’s have a massive punk
based following and as Kill Casino are a really
serious sounding punk rock band in the same style
of bands such as The Distillers, Hole and even Lacuna
Coil and The Vincent Black Shadows I am sure they
made many fans from the shows.
The new mini-album by Kill Casino is due for
release on the 10th August 2009 and I have to
say it is well worth waiting for, it features
6 tracks and only runs for 12 minutes so it is
a case of being over far too quickly but as soon
as it finished I found myself reaching for the
repeat button again and again.
The album starts with a short spooky sounding
introduction and then blast straight into ‘Reykjavik’
which starts off with some frantic guitar riffs
with front lady Karen Luan’s powerful vocals
coming in seconds later, Karen has such a mesmerizing
voice that you can’t help but fall in love
with especially when she is singing over such
tight sounding guitar riffs that would give bands
even like Queens Of The Stone Age a good run for
their money, the instrumental piece in the middle
of the song is by far the highlight of the song,
Karen knocks out some really bouncy basslines
whilst Chris Ryan continues to show off his guitar
riffs and Paul-Luc Gifford bashing the shit out
of his drum kit.
The opening riffs of ‘Second Sight’
remind me of the opening riffs of the Tenacious
D song ‘Beezleboss’ just a bit more
toned down version of it, Karen’s vocals
are really fast paced and melodic here, really
bringing the song to life.
‘You Came I Saw’ will have you shouting
along with Karen’s every word, ‘Nightclubs’
will have you bopping your head along whilst singing
along with Karen’s more slow paced style
of vocals, whilst ‘Disbelief’ is your
token acoustic track, it is the weakest track
on the EP but it gives you a true feel of how
beautiful Karen’s voice really is.
For a three piece Kill Casino have such a big
sound, there guitar riffs sound massive during
most tracks on the album, well apart from the
intro and acoustic track of course, vocally Karen
has a massive talent her vocals chop and change
throughout the songs on the album and it doesn’t
matter if she is singing melodically or screaming
and shouting, she always sounds like she is at
the top of her game.
A mini album with 6 tracks that only runs for
12 minutes doesn’t really sound like you
are getting value for money, but when the tracks
are of a high quality as seen here then trust
me ‘Paper Walls And The Voice Downstairs’
is worth every penny as you won’t be able
to put it down straight away.
4/5
