When The Maccabees released ‘No Kind Words’
and ‘Love You Better’ as singles it
made me really excited for their new album as the
song was so upbeat and catchy, but once the album
was released I was left slightly disappointed as
it didn’t have the feel good factor of their
debut album, the songs weren’t as easy to
get into and in general things seemed quite bland,
luckily I stuck with it and kept listening to the
album in hope that it would grow on me and within
time it did I still think it is nowhere near as
good as ‘Colour It In’.
The Maccabees have now announced the third single
to be taken from ‘Wall Of Arms’, that
song is ‘Can You Give It’ which is
due for release on the 6th July, the song is actually
one of the strongest tracks on the album, forget
how good ‘No Kind Words’ and ‘Love
You Better’ were as ‘Can you Give
It’ is without a doubt the best single to
be released from ‘Wall Of Arms’ so
far. Vocally Orlando Weeks comes across very strong
and mature sounding, the drumming is very constant
and in your face whilst the guitar riffs have
that classic Maccabees feel, in fact ‘Can
You Give It’ is the only track from the
new Maccabees album that slightly reminds me of
their earlier material.
I’m still not convinced that The Maccabees
have lived up to people’s expectations with
‘Wall Of Arms’ but then again most
bands find their second album to be the most difficult
to create and the responses that normally generate
from it are always very mixed, what I do know
is that ‘Can You Give It’ is the best
song on the album and is right up there with the
bands earlier singles of ‘Precious Time’
and ‘About Your Dress’.
5/5
