I'd been particularly impressed with the first single
taken from this
latest Eels release, called “My Timing Is
Off,” and was intrigued as to
whether the album in its entirity could meet the
high stardards set. The
short answer is, yes.
Those familiar with Eels will be fully aware
of the associated charm.
The simple melodies, and crisp beats, an odd nostalgic
beauty, and a
slightly gravelly waivering tone; all of these
make up the addictive
sound. I'd go as far to say that it's impossible
to even think about
frowning whilst being exposed to Eels.
From the opening track “Prizefighter,”
a boogie-swing number with a
rock n' roll edge, to “Tremendous Dynamite”
which adopts the rock n'
roll feel more heavily, to the unbeatable “My
Timing Is Off,” a gentle
yet pacey love song.
This really is a special release, and Eels aren't
trying to be something
they aren't. It's straight forward music, and
it isn't breaking down
boundaries in a desperate attempt for limelight.
Instead, they focus on
what they do best, and I'm thankful for that,
because this is a real
winner. Showcasing modern tones as well as some
nostlagic sounds, Eels
have earned themselves a spot in your music collection.
