First impressions are that this latest release from
Loney Dear is
significantly more listenable than the previous
release Loney Noir.
Unlistenable is a little strong, but I struggled
to really get into it.
Alas, this is more promising. “Airport Surroundings”
starts with a pacey
electro beat and bassline – and it's a real
gem. It retains the Loney
Dear sophistication, but with a new burst of life.
It's really something
quite special.
However unfortunately the party stops there.
The rest of the album
consists of two types of song. Most are the good
old fashioned tracks,
that are particularly thin on the ears and leave
Emil Svanängen's voice
waivering delicately above a gentle backing, which
are disappointingly
uninspiring. And then there are this odd, new
mutant strain, which I've
never heard coming from Loney Dear. This odd,
electro-breed of Loney
Dear that, with the exception of the opening track,
just doesn't really
work. And especially in contrast with the other
album tracks.
“Everything Turns To You” is an example
of this.
Although the work of Emil Svanängen holds
a lot of promise, it just
seems that these releases consistently, somewhere
or other along the
line, get off point. And the results are albums
which aren't quite
rounded enough. Despite a couple of cracking songs
(“I Was Only Going
Out”) there's just too much nonsense. And
you can't expect people to sit
down and consciously listen to nonsense. Well,
you can. But not me.
