Similar to the Sticker Star & Tape EP, this
is a real disappointment.
I'd first discovered Isaac at an acoustic show supporting
Luke Pickett,
and was really taken by his set. However, these
studio recordings have
quite the opposite effect.
My initial gripe with the previous EP was that
it was poorly levelled,
that the full band sounded thin and added nothing
to Isaac's charm which
is only really evident in his acoustic state.
However this new album,
Bears, presents us with the more issues, the main
one of which, is the
fact that yeah, these songs are lovey-dovey and
charming and all that,
but is it aimed at a twelve year old or something?
There's a childlike
naivety nestled in the album, exentuated in the
opening title track. For
a guy who I'd *estimate* is in his early twenties,
(who doesn't have a
Wikipedia page, really?) his songs lack character
and sophistication.
Encouraging teenie-bop-culture isn't cool, and
never will be, even if
you put a synth in there.
The album also highlights that the vocal isn't
even that strong – a
mistake which I had made previously. All the words
seem to be sung at a
similar pitch throughout the album; lacking excitement
and passion. Now
all that remains above this predictable backing
trash, is a monotonous
half-arsed drone.
Sam Isaac shouldn't have taken this direction.
Loads of little girls out
there will love him, and will be quoting his lyrics
all over Bebo, I've
no doubt, but this really doesn't tickle my pickle.
It epitomises the
word average, so don't waste your time –
but see if you can find him in
a solo acoustic gig.
2.5/5
