I'll be honest, I dismissed Bat For Lashes as a
floundering tart as soon
as I heard her, but now the album's here, and it
would be wrong not to
have a listen. I've been surprised recently how
similar write-off bands
could actually end up throwing out a real winner
(Noisettes – Wild Young
Hearts) so let's see what BFL have to offer.
Unfortunately, my opinion hasn't be changed,
but at least you'll get a
reason.
A brief overview of Bat For Lashes. Female lead
vocal, sweeping every
key, octave, pitch, whatever. And uninspiring
backing music – whether it
be 'atmospheric' drum rolls, or a generic tune
that is buried deep
beneath the vocal anyway.
I think it's fair to say that this music appeals
to a more chilled vibe,
than that of upbeat music. However, the lead vocal
is so all over the
place, often touching on notes that really grate,
and it's all too
dramatic and theatrical to fade into the background.
It's impossible to
chill out when you're listening to a woman bellow
out dramatic nonsense>
over a backing that can't support it. It's like
having another voice in
the room with you, but one that is in distress.
Bjork meets Massive Attack.
I've no doubt that Bat For Lashes could be good
– she's got a good voice
and all, but I think the backing music needs to
find itself and complete
the sound. It's too empty and airy-fairy, and
altogether is the kind of
thing I'd expect from some pretentious female
art students. (I don't
know if anyone associated with the formation of
BFL is an art student.)
That said, the only people I know who really enjoy
BFL are
semi-pretenteous women.
One or two tracks adopt a bit more of a Klaxons
sound – with multiple
quivering vocals and a far more electro feel to
the backing music.
However, it still doesn't get anywhere. Someone
likes it, for some
reason, but I certainly don't, and I'm not sure
you will either.
