‘New Hopes, New Demonstrations’ is an
album that I have been looking forward to ever since
I heard The Ghost Of A Thousand were working on
new material and had signed to Epitaph Records,
the album is now here and it is fantastic, it doesn’t
move on much further than their debut album ‘This
Is Where The Fight Begins’, in fact it pretty
much carries on from where that album finishes,
it’s a little bit more heavier and brutal
sounding but where things are that much brutal this
time around, The Ghost Of A Thousand have also paced
things out with the inclusion of a couple of more
mellow sounding tracks.
The album starts in a brutal way with ‘Moved
As Mountains, Dreamt Of By The Sea’, which
starts with Tom Lacey screaming his bollocks off
with his raw sounding vocals, the drum beats and
guitar riffs equally sound like an army of machine
guns going off, the group backing vocals add variety
to the song, 2minutes and 25 seconds later the
song is over and you have just had a true feeling
that The Ghost Of A Thousand are back better than
ever and not to be fucked with.
‘Bright Lights’ is the bands new
single and once again it is an hard hitting song
with Tom Lacey proper going for it with his vocals,
he sounds like a man on a mission who wants to
get his message across in a fierce and hectic
away, the guitar riffs are crunching and the drums
beats pack an equally big punch.
‘Knees, Toes, Teeth’ has a straight
up rock feel about it with the way that Tom Lacey’s
vocals are toned down compared to on the majority
of the album, the bass rhythms stand out well
but it’s the hard hitting guitar riffs that
really do pack a punch during the hectic chorus
which see’s Tom scream “It’s
only rock and roll’.
‘Split The Atom’ see’s The
Ghost Of A Thousand totally depart from the sound
that we have been so used to from them, instead
the song starts off really toned down with free
flowing vocals and humming style guitar riffs
that do build up to have that Ghost Of A Thousand
style bounce about them, as the song builds up,
things start to get bigger and louder with Tom
Lacey singing “Split the atom, split it,
split the atom” over an thunderous drum
beat.
‘Neptune’ is a fast paced punk rock
number, the more sing-a-long vocals come across
sounding a little bit strange, but the well loved
Tom Lacey screams and shouts come and go throughout
the song, the drum roll towards the end of the
song is fantastic once again, the guitar riffs
are equally as good stand out, but the song seems
to lack the big bass lines The Ghost Of A Thousand
are well loved for.
‘Nobody Likes A Hero’ is a really
interesting song, it starts off with a short instrumental
introduction that features some proper loud drum
beats which makes you think the song is going
to explode into madness in any second but the
song makes a u turn as the vocals come in sounding
slow and melodic, and then suddenly the song builds
up and explodes when you don’t expect it
to, into a massive assault of juddering guitar
riffs and crazy drum beats.
‘Running On Empty’ is a fast paced
song that has hardcore written all over it, the
song features some great guitar riffs that are
just shouting out to be included on a future guitar
hero game. ‘Fed To The Ocean’ is a
great riff-tastic angry song, ‘Good Old
Fashioned Loss’ finishes the album and is
such a great track in the way that it has many
twists and turns through the 6minutes that the
song runs for and closes the album in a massive
cinematic style.
‘New Hopes, New Demonstrations’
is one hell of a stunning album, if you thought
these guy’s debut album was good then you
really need to check out their second album as
even though it follows the same formula as the
first album, everything about it sounds just that
bit bigger and better.
