When Faith No More announced that they had reformed
earlier in the year and announced that they were
going to be playing some major festivals across
Europe during the summer including a headline appearance
at the Download Festival on the 12th June, it was
met with a big mixed reaction, there was so many
people happy to see that Faith No More were back
with people in their thousands booking tickets for
these festival shows to see their heroes play live
either again or for the first time, whilst on the
other hand there was a lot of people who thought
the announcement was over rated and didn’t
really know much about Faith No More or understand
what all the fuss was about.
Well if you are were like me and could only remember
one song by Faith No More and that being ‘Epic’
then your luck is in as Faith No More are releasing
‘The Very Best Definitive Ultimate Greatest
Hits Collection’ on June 1st, which is just
enough time for you to check out the band, hear
18 of their greatest songs as well as a few demos
and rare songs, master the lyrics and make your
mind up on if you are going to watch history in
the making and see their comeback slot at Download
Festival.
After listening to ‘The Greatest Hits Collection’
I have realised that I knew more Faith No More
songs than I first thought, the first three tracks
from the collection were actually previous Faith
No More singles that I have heard but only ever
realised that ‘Epic’ was by Faith
No More. The opening track ‘The Real Thing’
is an epic song it runs for the best part of 8
minutes and it’s a song that takes a long
time to build up but it shows of the Faith No
More rap/rock style that everyone grew to love.
‘From Out Of Nowhere’ is another really
strong song, the guitar riffs feel really tight
and sound powerful whilst Mike Patton’s
is where it is all at, as one minute he will be
singing in a high style and then the next he will
be singing in a low style.
‘Epic’ is the main song that everyone
loves the most from Faith No More and it stills
sounds as good today as it does when it was first
released, now this is the perfect song when it
comes to checking out Mike Patton’s vocals,
he raps, he sings in a melodic way and sounds
quite whiny for the chorus but ever so loveable
at the same time, now there isn’t really
that many vocalists around that can sing in a
variety of ways and use different styles in each
and every song, the bassline during ‘Epic’
is really heavy sounding and stands out so well
and moments like this are here to remind you why
there is so much hype about Faith No more reforming.
From listening to ‘The Greatest Hits Collection’,
I have realised that I like Faith No More a lot
than I originally thought, songs such as ‘We
Care A Lot’, ‘R’N’R’
‘Kindergarten’, ‘Land Of Sunshine’
and ‘Be Aggressive’ features such
a variety in sound whilst sounding so good all
these years on.
The second CD of the ‘Greatest Hits Collection’
features 10 tracks which is made up of B-side
and rarities now this is a good addition to the
collection but for the standard listener who wants
to hear the history of Faith No More I would be
surprised if they listened to the bonus track
more than a couple of times as the disc is a bit
of a filler and something that the hardcore fans
might appreciate a little bit more.
Just from listening to a couple of Faith No More
songs you realise that bands such as Korn, Papa
Roach, Deftones, Limp Bizkit would not be here
if it was no for Faith No More, they started the
whole nu-metal scene back in 1982 and influenced
all the bands I just mentioned.
I do think ‘The Greatest Hits Collection’
has come at the right time and I am sure thousands
of people are going to snap the album up as soon
as it is released on the 1st June so they can
prepare themselves for Faith No More’s set
11 days later at Download, now I already know
some people see the release as a bit of a cash
in but end of the day there is no better way to
get into Faith No More than buy buying this collection.
