The New 1920 are the latest quartet to attempt to
blast out of Wales, the band come from Cardiff and
are already doing pretty well for themselves having
already played shows in the UK and Europe alongside
bands such as Lostprophets, Fighting With Wire,
Kids In Glass Houses, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly and
have also played at a selection of music festivals
on their travels, not bad for a band who haven’t
even released an EP yet, that’s all about
to change though.
On the 20th July 2009 The New 1920 are going
to release their self titled debut EP and it is
actually a really strong rocking release, but
then it should be as the EP has been produced
by some well known musicians who are already riding
high in the mainstream rock scene, yes the EP
was produced by Stuart Richardson, Mike Lewis
and Ian Watkins of the Lostprophets.
The EP may only be 4 tracks long and only run
for 14 minutes but it packs a massive punch, three
of the four tracks on the EP are killer in rhythm,
strength , noise and sound, for example the opening
track ‘Come Around’ will instantly
draw you in with its bouncy instrumental introduction
and then the clear and confident sounding vocals
from front man Colin Francies will draw you in
that little bit more and then the explosive chorus
will leave you jumping for joy.
You then have ‘Amber Gambler’ the
song is so great, it has so much bounce about
it, the song has been written really well, it
builds up in such a strong bouncy way and then
just like the previous song it explodes with a
massive chorus that is full of hooks and catchy
melody and group backing vocals.
‘Head For The Exit’ starts with group
chant along vocals, this lasts for about 12 seconds
and then the guitars come in with some rocking
riffs, once again the song builds up in time with
everything being turned up to 11 and going nuts
during the chorus, this is how rock music should
be massive sounding with a punk rock edge.
When I said three of the four songs are killer
you will understand what I mean once you get to
the last song ‘Keep On’, it is a live
acoustic track and it just shows a totally different
side of the band, it proves that Colin has a really
strong set of vocals as acoustic music is the
best for finding out how well a singer can really
sing, the song is short but sweet in a very good
way but it is nowhere near as special as the other
songs on the EP.
I really like The New 1920, they play the type
of music that the alternative music scene is really
crying out for now and I am sure they are going
to generate a hype once their debut EP is released
and they are also going to get very big very soon
as you don’t come across band’s with
massive sounding songs that are as addictive as
these guys tracks that often.
