Album Review
Lemonheads – VarshonsLemonheads – Varshons

Varshons is a cover album from the Lemonheads, who formed over twenty years ago. Since then however they have split and reformed, and the line-up has been reshuffled. Varshons boasts cover versions of songs by Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen, and even Christina Aguilera.

However, unfortunately, a majority of them sound very similar. All have been kitted out with the same folk/country feel, generally uninspiring and far from adventurous, with deep plain vocals throughout. Although it seems to add a new perspective to Aguilera's “Beautiful,” the other tracks don't really benefit from the sound. It's very Knopfler, but a really average Knopfler.

Track seven, “Dirty Robot” featuring Kate Moss, is really the only track to stray away from the limp-Levellers sound. And it's a real sore thumb too, with drum machines and synths and oh Lord this doesn't seem right. It contrasts really harshly with the rest of the album, but as a song in its own right, I guess it's not so bad. Coincedence that it's a different singer? The following track “Dandelion Seeds” is a bit more Kula Shaker like, and offers more than the rest of the album, but still not a great deal.

I honestly can't see this having much appeal with a younger audience, but this could certainly be a stocking filler for Dads nationwide. You should be able to get it from a bargain bin near you soon.

2/5
