“Mel's Song” starts off sounding like
an upbeat Penate number, and then
suddenly accquires a crude vocal that talks about
body odour and boners
and this and that and eurgh, I'm sick of it. It's
another tune which is
really well recorded, and musically, it's a simple
alternative indie
backing and it works really well. Even the vocal
tone itself I could
deal with. But the lyrics just make me want to be
sick. It's trying to
be funny and failing, mainly due to the obviousness
of their choices of
words. Instead of being cleverly written, it's far
too schoolboy and
encourages one cringe too many.
It isn't until the third and final track “Little
Wasted Angel” that you
see what the opener could have been. A more serious
song, but it's
fairly melodic and just quite nice to listen to.
Relaxing, raw sounding,
very campfire. And a couple of little vocal harmonies
come in, oh it's
delightful.
But this one track cannot account for the first
track, nor unfortunately
can it account for the oddly placed, wonky-electro
second track, “He
Only Goes Out On Tuesdays,” a mis-matched
six minutes of grimey electro
rap, which is really hard to listen to. It's too
in your face, they need
to officially chill the fuck out, stop trying
to sound 'dark,' and focus
on the type of music they can actually do.
1.5/5
