“The Timing Is Off” really epitomises
Eels style, and proves that not
only they can still do it, but also that it's a
timeless sound that
we'll always have a place for in our hearts. You
just can't fault
something that isn't setting out to achieve anything
ambitious in the
first place. Gentle melodic clean guitar plucks
beneath the classic soft
croaky tone of Mr E. The pace is held with a steady
modern crisp beat,
and all in all, we've got a winner. It's really
impressive; if you're a
fan of Eels then you're going to be extremely happy
with this. And even
if you don't like them, think that some of their
material is a little
wishy-washy and off-centre for your liking, whatever
your criticism;
this is not the same. In fact, I'd go as far to
say it's impossible not
to like. Bold statement, but there it is, kids.
“Fresh Blood” is a bit more wonky
as opposed to soft melodies, but that
doesn't mean it's bad, wait, wait. Vocals aside,
which are very Moby,
and instrumental track sounds like some modern
post-party intellectual
chillout. It oozes DJ Shadow from the hard hitting
beat, to the
quivering sweeping synths and other samples. This
is more unlike Eels
than I've ever heard, but it's beautiful.
I never thought Eels could excite me so much.
That sounds a bit wrong.
What I mean is... oh forget it, I love Eels.
