Art Brut are a Dorset based band – no doubt
best known for “Formed A Band” and their
distinctive style. The music is generic rock with
a punky sense of rawness, but with an almost spoken-word
vocal line, telling humourous tales of this and
that. But generally, it's funny stuff.
This latest album, “Art Brut vs Satan”
still has the comical aspect, with songs about
“DC Comics and Chocolate Milkshake,”
but it lacks elsewhere. After much deliberating,
I've decided that the issue is the delivery of
these lyrics. I mean for starters, it's always
sounds odd having spoken word over music with
such a definate beat, but the earlier albums seemed
to just flow. Whereas here, nearly every song
just, doesn't quite work. I'm fairly sure that's
my main quibble, anyway.
And I might just be being pedantic but the words
in the booklet are often different to the words
sung. In fact there are a kazillion errors. I
can't work out whether that's intentional or not.
We'll leave that one.
Other than that, it's still Art Brut how they've
always been. Simple, yet amusing and altogether
charming. There's nothing ground-breaking, no
epic solos or ball-rattling riffs. But I don't
think Art Brut have ever tried to be any of those.
They're good fun. They were, and they always will
be. But, yeah, in comparison to other albums,
this isn't quite as good. “Twist and Shout”
is probably a personal favourite, as well as the
following track “Summer Job” - mainly
due to the fact the only noted issue is seemingly
addressed. But alas, we're at the end of the album.
3/5
