This may seem a bit odd but this is the first time
that I have come across The Birthday Massacre and
they have been together since 1999, so either I
have been hiding under a rock for the past ten years
or the band have never quite made it in the UK until
now, I’m not sure which one but either way
I have been missing out on one of the most exciting
original rock bands to come out of Canada in the
last ten years.
In their time today The Birthday Massacre have
released three studio album, an EP and now ‘Show
And Tell’ which is their debut live album
which was recorded in Hamburg in Germany, now
you might wonder why a Canadian band have chosen
to release an live album from an show they did
in Germany, well I have done a bit of research
and found out that the band are signed to Repo
Records in Germany and have a really big following
there so they couldn’t of made a better
decision, where ‘Show And Tell’ is
a live album it also acts as a greatest hits in
a way that they most of their singles, popular
songs and fan favourites appear on the album which
in a way kills two birds with one stone and lets
me catch up with what I have been missing straight
away.
Ok above I said The Birthday Massacre are quite
an original band well there are but you can clearly
see moments of Mindless Self Indulgence, Nightwish,
Lacuna Coil and a few other bands within their
sound but only in the way that there are some
electronics in place like Mindless Self Indulgence
have and the front person is a lady who has a
beautiful voice like the vocalists of both Nightwish
and Lacuna Coil have but don’t forget The
Birthday Massacre have been around for ten years,
they aren’t one of these new bands who try
and copy every band around trying to dominate
the in scene.
So ‘Show And Tell’ is kind of like
a greatest hits and live album mixed into one,
it features songs from all of their studio albums
and is a perfect start for anyone who has never
come across The Birthday Massacre before, and
from what I can see The Birthday Massacre have
a stunning back catalogue of songs as everything
about this live album manages to please me.
The album starts with ‘Before Dark’
which is a musical introduction which features
many different electronics and soundscapes whilst
the fans are screaming their lungs out as there
heroes take to the stage the song runs straight
through into ‘Video Kid’, where front
lady Chibi greets the crowd with “Hello
everyone”, before going on a melodic journey
with her strong vocals, the song is full of energy
and crammed with electronic synths and pop Goth
rock sounds, as soon as the song finishes Chibi
thanks the crowd in German saying “Danke
Shurn” and then returns to talking in English
which I find quite amusing.
‘Lovers End’, is a very big sounding
song, it starts off quite spooky sounding with
the various different electronic soundscapes and
with front lady Chibi introducing the song with
a set of scary sounding vocals, the song has a
real big catchy sing-along chorus whilst keeping
the spooky feel with the backing music.
Songs like ‘Goodnight’, ‘Falling
Down’, ‘Violet’, ‘Weekend’
and ‘Happy Birthday’ all have a really
big sound with totally different electronic sounds,
and equally as good fast flowing melodic vocals,
with ‘Happy Birthday’ being top of
the crop.
From what I can tell from the live album is that
The Birthday Massacre have a big tight sound live
and really please their fans, and on the other
hand the band have a huge back catalogue of great
songs, ‘Show And Tell’ is a must have
for fans of the band and a great starting point
for anyone else, I couldn’t recommend The
Birthday Massacre more.
5/5
