I always have the time to listen to new British
rock and roll bands, in fact I quite enjoying listening
to all the underground bands that release their
debut albums hoping to gain a steady following and
slowly get a name for themselves, the latest band
I have come across is Draven who are nicely named
after Eric Draven from the film The Crow and they
are releasing their debut album ‘Eden’
on the 25th May and its actually quite a monster
of an album, in the way that the songs would go
down well in a big stadium as these guys blast out
their massive guitar riffs and part cowboy sound,
you will understand what I mean in a minute.
The album opens with ‘Blitz’, and
the opening 40 seconds is enough to tell you that
these guys mean business and they have mastered
the idiots guide to rock book as they simple have
one of the best instrumental introductions I have
heard from a brand new British band in a long
time, the opening drum beat and dual guitar assault
is so fresh and tight sounding, when the vocals
come in things get that little bit more better
as twins Frank Paoli and Jim Paoli not only share
guitar duties but they also share vocal duties
which really helps bring their songs to life which
is showcased her with excellence, just check out
those power chords and guitar solos on offer in
this opening track.
Now you are probably wondering what I meant when
I mentioned Cowboy sound, well basically track
two ‘Itchy Finger’ starts off with
a bit fat instrumental introduction that sounds
not too far from something that Tool have played
in the past, but then suddenly that classic Cowboy
sound comes in, you know the one from the old
movies where they are in the Saloon and have a
good old shoot out with the first one reaching
for their pistol becoming the winner, and these
Cowboy sounds pop up throughout the whole song,
whilst the Cowboy sounds aren’t popping
up the song is rocking with the various different
guitar solos and strong vocal work.
The album title track ‘Eden’ is up
next and it’s a cracking track, it starts
off quite mellow vocally with one of the slower
style Metallica sounding guitar introductions,
the song happens to be a lot more laid back than
any of the other songs on the album but it has
such a good groove which allows the song to flow
so well and prove how serious and mature Draven
are.
‘Fight’ is a proper kick arse song,
it starts with a loud chant of “Fight”
and then the opening guitar riffs kick in proper
thick and fast which runs right up to the chorus
where one set of vocals becomes quite catchy whilst
the other brings in more shouts of “fight”,
the song is full of groove and catchy hooks.
Draven are a band that need to be taken seriously,
they have produced a fine debut album that features
11 stand out tracks, seriously there is not a
dull moment on offer, even the few slow tracks
they have created are killer tracks, it is quite
rare getting a debut album where every track is
so good but Draven have managed to create that
much needed perfect album right from the start.
