Over the last 12 to 18 months D2 Records have released
some great albums from a really good line up of
artists and it has taken until now for them to release
an album that I am really not to keen on and that
is the new solo studio album from ex The Almighty
front man Ricky Warwick.
Ricky Warwick’s new album is called ‘Belfast
Confetti’ and its due out on the 27th April
and features 11 acoustic rock songs, now I normally
love acoustic rock music but what has put me off
Ricky Warwick is listen to his single ‘The
Arms OF Belfast Town’ a few times to many
whilst reviewing it to try and get a good opinion
of the song but in the end it reminded me of Irish
country music such as Sean Wilson which can’t
be a good thing when it’s the style of music
your dad listens to on a nonstop daily basis.
There are some good moments on the album such
as the opening track ‘Can’t Wait For
Tomorrow’ as Ricky plays the song with true
passion as he strums his acoustic guitar and sings
until his heart is content, the song has a slight
catchy streak.
‘Hanks Blues’ is another nice sounding
track, Ricky’s vocals sound slightly different
here, and in the back ground you can hear Ricky
playing his acoustic guitar whilst someone claps
along to the beat.
It’s also hard not to like ‘Throwin’
Dirt’ the song really showcases how strong
Ricky’s vocals are as he sings along with
strength and passion whilst strumming his acoustic
guitar very slowly, this is an acoustic power
ballad that is there to be enjoyed, the harmonica
comes out towards the end to give the song that
true Irish feel.
Where there are good moments on the album there
are far too many moment s that don’t really
go anywhere such as the laid back ‘Angel
Of Guile’, the song is so laid back it’s
barely listenable, ‘Born Fightin’
is another laid back song that has that skip factor
written all over it, same with ‘Can’t
Hurt A Fool’ and the closing track ‘If
Your Gonna Bleed (Wear Black)’
I feel that you need to be a true fan of Ricky
Warwick to really appreciate this album as from
where I’m coming from I can see there are
a few good acoustic tracks, many fillers and a
couple of bad tracks, the bad tracks you will
only listen to moments of before you skip it,
the fillers you won’t listen to more than
a couple of times and the good tracks will wear
in the end, Ricky Warwick isn’t for me,
but that doesn’t mean he isn’t for
you, if you like his previous work with The Almighty
or love acoustic or Irish music then give him
a listen as he might be what you have been looking
for but just don’t hold much hope on him.
