Birmingham, UK Based 5 piece orchestral metal band, with
there debut release on the Phonix Music Label, which
is produced by themselves and Greg Chandler, This
band are following in the same vein as Nightwish,
Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation.
The album starts with the album title track Reason
& Madness, which is an instrumental track
that starts with some bells and piano that eventually
bleeds into the album proper with Blood ridden
skys, while the verses are a bit on boring side,
the chorus is very good with haunting vocals from
singer Sally Holliday, but sadly for her, her
attempts at proper operatic singing throughout
the album fail to come off, perhaps she should
ditch that part on future albums, some of her
vocals are backed up with death growls, while
its tries to work it doesn't and is honestly unneeded. The
first decent song to happen is Echoes Of Sorrow,
with some male singing, which seems to work really
well within the track, there's also some crunching
guitars, and simple drumming, this song is more
like lacuna coil, and is the best track so far.the
album finishes of with two epic in length tracks,
Iniquity, which has some acoustic guitars which
works well with the orchestral element, especially
in the verses where it all quietens down. Album
closer is Silence In Solitude, kicking off with
piano, and then followed buy some squealy guitars,
bring about a dramatic sound, which gallops in
places the album finishes where it started on
the piano with out the bell tolls.
While not to my personal taste and that other
bands do Orchestral metal better than Hanging
Doll they seem to be on the right track with there
first album effort, but needs to drop the operatic
singing, or do it a hell of a lot better that
whats on offer here, Reason & Madness out
now.
3/5
