Most people will know Ricky Warwick for his time
in the UK based band The Almighty, the band were
together from 1998 right up until 2001 and in that
time a fair few singles and albums were released,
ever since the band split up Ricky has gone solo
and he is now ready to release album number 3 which
is called ‘Belfast Confetti’, but in
the mean time he is releasing the lead single from
that album which happens to be ‘The Arms Of
Belfast Town’ which happens to be the official
Ireland football team song as they fight through
the qualifiers for their chance to play in the 2010
World Cup.
‘The Arms Of Belfast Town’ is a full
on acoustic track that is lead by Ricky strumming
his acoustic guitar with the odd Irish sounding
instrument popping up every now and again, the
song could easily pass off as a song by the Pogues
or even Irish folk star Sean Wilson as it fully
has that authentic Irish feel about it, the song
is a love poem about how Ricky Belfast and the
Irish football team, it’s the kind of song
you can imagine people going crazy to when they
have had a few beers to many.
The b-side to the song is a rock version of the
same song and to be fair it’s not that rocking
but it’s good to hear a set of drums being
smashed about and some more rocking guitar riffs
from the electric guitars, it makes a good addition
to the acoustic version but I prefer the acoustic
version by far.
The other song on the single is ‘Love Owes’,
the song really lacks that get up and go feeling
and instead becomes a repetitive track that goes
nowhere.
If you are Irish and love football then I am
sure that ‘The Arms Of Belfast Town’
is already being played on your local pub jukebox
daily with you loving every moment of it, and
for the people that aren’t Irish or don’t
love football then this song really wont please
you.
