The opening track to the album is “This Rhythm,”
the first single to be
released off of the record, and features the vocals
of Samuel Dust from
Late of the Pier.
Recorded on the same systems used by Kraftwerk,
the German electro vibes
have seeped into Filthy Dukes, and it's almost
like brand new material
from Kraftwerk themselves, but with a cleaner
Mylo-esque finish. The
pulsing bass, the fluttering sequences, the cheesey
euphoric tones, it's
all here. That said, “This Rhythm”
is irritatingly catchy. Let's see
what else the album has to offer, shall we?
There are other collaborations, including Brandon
Curtis of Secret
Machines and Orlando Weeks of The Maccabees, on
the title track, a
personal favourite. Closely linked to the mood
of Maccabees recent “No
Kind Words” single, which the obvious electro
take. “Light Skips Cross
Heart” is another great track.
This is, despite the corniness that runs throughout,
a good album.
However, it's not one to sit down and listen to.
It's full of tracks
that could be real floor-fillers in many “arty”
“alternative” venues,
but not for home-entertainment. There just always
seems to be something
moving at a ridiculous speed – whether it
be the beat, the bass, or some
other wacky scattered synth line. Sat still, this
causes adrenaline to
pump through your veins, and you're stuck in an
extremely uncomfortable
urge to run around like a lunatic. But when you're
out where dancing
around like a prat is openly encouraged, this
could, and no doubt will,
be a bag of hits.
4/5
