Album Review
Dieter Schoon - LablazaDieter Schoon – Lablaza

I'll admit that on first listening I was not impressed, however, my initial thoughts are subsiding the second time around, and suddenly Dieter Schoon has acquired some appeal. With the CD came some literature, a convoluted review and general “big up” of the album, and altogether a bit off-putting. Anything described as “unique” and “maverick” rarely live up to expectations. It's a bit strong, that's all I'm saying.

So for something a little more concise. Vampire Weekend with a more electronic vibe, not only in the electronic instruments appearing in many songs, but also the computerised jittery beats that also make a frequent appearance. Okay so once you've imagined that, now replace the vocal with a wailing sweeping vocal that isn't note perfect and cleaner than your cleanest whistle. And then imagine, that now and again, they get completely fucked and make some songs that you can't quite get your head around. And there we have Dieter Schoon.

There's a nice mix of electronic and “real” tracks – and even blends of the two. And there are just some nuts ones, some us “Auf Wiedersehen” which combines a thin breakneck beat under wailing vocals and a sloppy amateur bass line.

The final track “Jethead” is a real treat, at first; an odd electronic muffled drum beat features beneath an acoustic guitar and vocal tracks – and then it transforms into some crazy dance number, which is a real shame.

Highlight tracks are “Mary Jane,” “Warm Hearts,” a particularly Vampire-esque number, and “Everyone Must Leave,” a slow and atmospheric track which would be more closely linked to The Arcade Fire, perhaps.

But I don't know, all in all, the album in its entirety, too much of it is just all over the place. It's almost ketamine in musical form, you're not really sure what's going on, and the widespread confusion means you tune out and miss the really promising moments, which the album has, don't get me wrong. Meh, it's a hard one to crack...
