If you read our review of the debut Smudge EP ‘StayFeelRegret’
then you will know that we love these guys, the
EP only features 3 tracks but the tracks were crammed
full of brilliance, the songs were fast and melodic
and frontman Jack Valentine beautiful clear vocals
meant that you would be able to spot these guys
from a mile off.
Well Smudge are now back with their second EP
‘Where I Go at Night’ and this time
around everything is that little bit darker, the
EP artwork is very dark looking, but then it should
be judging from the EP title but even the music
it’s self is that little bit more mature
and darker, everything seems to be turned up that
little bit louder and the production seems to
be a tad more polished than on the debut EP.
‘Where I Go at Night’, opens with
‘The Thrill, The Ride’ which is easily
the best track on the new three track EP, it opens
with such passion and energy, Jack Valentine’s
vocals sound better than every, they are still
as clear and melodic as they ever were but this
time around he sounds that little bit more serious,
the twin guitar work is awesome with the way there
are some fantastic sounding meaty guitar riffs
and even a huge solo in the middle of the song,
everything about this song is so good and well
thought about.
‘Speechless’ starts off sounding
like everyone’s favourite new genre of music
with its electronic style introduction, compared
to the opening track this is a more slow paced
melodic track, it still packs a big punch instrumentally
as these guys don’t like to lay off from
the big guitar riffs and bouncy basslines in fact
it seems like they thrive on playing them.
The last track on the EP is ‘We Are The
Night’ the song opens with a big old melodic
sound with its fast paced guitar riffs and Jack
Valentine’s fast flowing beautiful melodic
vocals, after a few listens of the song you will
find yourself singing “We are, we are, The
Night” along with Jack Valentine in the
catchy manor he has adopted.
As I said before Smudge have the potential to
be right up there with the heavyweight pop-punk
bands and in fact I actually believe that they
should be there as they have such a quality sound,
their first EP was very much poppy-punk and a
good introduction to the band and this time around
with their second EP ‘Where I Go At Night’
Smudge are showing us how serious and hard hitting
they can be, go and do yourself a favour and pick
up this EP and make sure you listen to it at full
volume for maximum enjoyment.
‘StayFeelRegret’ was good but ‘Where
I Go At Night’ is fucking fantastic, if
only we had a higher rating than 5 at Alternative
Vision.
5/5
