EP Review
Rieser - Drinking DenRieser – Drinking Den

It’s not often that you receive an EP that comes with a free beer mat stuck to the front of the EP cover as the artwork, now that in itself deserves a band 1 star before you have even heard the music and this is exactly what the Edinburgh quartet Rieser have done with their new four track EP ‘Drinking Den’.

If all fairness the EP isn’t a bad effort the whole artwork and packaging of the EP has taken some time and effort that is quite clear to see and the music its self is slightly rocking but it doesn’t really offer anything new to the rock scene but Rieser certainly know how to write some great songs.

The EP opens with the title track ‘Drinking Den’, and the song reminds me off a poor man’s version of the huge progressive American rock band Tool, now by me saying that it doesn’t mean that the song ‘Drinking Den’ is cool, it just means in comparison to such a great band it doesn’t really stand a chance but as a track from a up and coming new band it’s not an bad effort at all.

‘The Actor’ is a really upbeat song and the best track on the four track EP, the guitar riffs are very polished sounding and Chris Blair’s vocals are more upbeat here than they are throughout the whole EP.

‘Call Me Round’ is a really slow paced indie song that fails to really get going, it keeps with the same pace all the way through and be fair I have seen faster snails moving than the pace this song takes.

The last track on the EP is ‘The Ringmaster’ the song reminds me of clowns, circuses and children’s parties, it’s a pretty random mixture but they are technically come into the same category really.

Overall Rieser are going to struggle to break out of the underground scene especially with the songs featured on this EP, don’t get me wrong there are some good ideas and they can all play their instruments well but they just haven’t mastered that killer song writing skill yet, maybe this is the sound and style that the band want and if so then fair play to them but just don’t expect big things to happen in the near future.
