I didn’t quite know what to expect when I
put the new Chris Cornell single ‘Part Of
Me’ into my CD player, I knew the man had
been working on his third solo album ‘Scream’
for a long time even cancelling UK festivals appearances
last summer so he could concentrate on writing and
recording his new album and I can honestly say I
was not expecting what I heard but at the same time
you can tell Chris Cornell has put his time to good
use and totally recreated his sound as an solo artist.
‘Part Of Me’ is a song that has been
produced by hip hop producer Timberland, and in
fact the whole of Chris Cornell’s new solo
album ‘Scream’ has been produced by
Timberland and ‘Part Of Me’ is a bit
of a taster of what you can expect from the new
album once it is released on the 9th March. ‘Part
Of Me’ is going to shock a lot of Chris
Cornell fans especially the people that have followed
him during both his time in Soundgarden and Audioslave
as this song is about as far apart from the music
of these bands than anything. The song it’s
self is a poppy hip hop influenced track that
is crammed full of disco beats and features a
really catchy chorus, vocally it sounds nothing
like Chris Cornell but that is where Timberland’s
production skills come in, the song even goes
as far as reminding me of some of the Material
from the third full length Fall Out Boy album
‘Infinity On High’ as Timberland produced
a few songs there and you can tell his production
work a mile off.
Chris Cornell claims that this is the best work
he has ever done in his career, now that is debateable
but what I will say is that this is the most important
bit of work he has ever done in his career as
it’s so different from anything he has ever
done and now it’s time for Chris Cornell
to find out how loyal and hardcore his fan base
really are.
4/5
