‘Land And Sea’ is the new EP from Cambridge
five piece Thefirst, the band formed three years
ago and recorded the EP at Ignition studios, London,
and Regal House Studios, Wisbech and features five
brand new tracks.
‘Land And Sea’ is quite a diverse sounding
release, it has some really poppy moment with really
catchy hooks and it also has some heavy moments
with more scream along vocals and louder guitar
riffs, but then again these guys are influenced
by a wide variety of bands from The Bloodhound Gang,
Bring Me The Horizon right through to the Gallows
which kind of explains how they came up with their
own sound.
The EP starts with ‘Lily Allen Keys’
, the song starts off with a big drum roll and
really bouncy guitar riffs before front man Matt
Smith comes in with his extremely catchy, clear
sounding lead vocals, there are a lot of backing
vocals coming and going throughout the song with
3 members of the band providing backing vocals,
overall the song has a lot going on for it and
these guys have thought long and hard about what
they are doing and what they want to achieve and
they have achieved a top song in ‘Lily Allen
Keys’.
‘Schofield Can’t Catch’ starts
off with an insanely catchy bit of instrumental
work, and then Matt Smith’s vocals come
in louder and heavier here making his presence
felt with some screams, but soon after the song
goes on a massive melodic ride and features some
really good bass lines and guitar riffs coming
and going throughout the majority of the song,
with even a breathtaking guitar solo coming in
towards the end of the song, this is how fast
melodic music should be.
‘Little Hell’ appears to be the token
slow song from the EP, every band creates a slow
song and this is Thefirst’s attempt, the
song starts off with a really long jamming style
session introduction below Matt Smith’s
vocals come in really slow and softly spoken and
the song keeps the same pace throughout, with
the odd backing vocal bringing the song more to
life.
The EP finishes with ‘AVD’, and it
seems like Thefirst have saved the best till last,
as ‘AVD’ has a lot going for it, it’s
a really powerful song that you will want to scream
or sing along to, I will let you take your pick
on which one you choose, but it really does have
a lot going for it especially with its powerful
chorus where Matt smith’s vocals verge on
the scream side of things.
Thefirst are a talented band and what a way for
the band to try and create a name for themselves
in the Underground scene with the release of their
new EP ‘Land And Sea’ and a mammoth
set of tour dates to go with it.
4/5
