The Maccabees, known for their quirky wonky indie
breaks, that twist and
turn and beg for you to sing along; have changed.
Or that's what this
release suggests. However, and thankfully, it's
still bloody awesome.
“No Kind Words” is a significantly
more linear song than we're used to,
not to mention the dark mood. A gentle track that
features a deep vocal
that carries the simple backing, above your typical
Maccabees backing
vocals.
The final minute of the song is bursting with
energy. All the
frustration built up in the opening minutes, with
“if you've got no kind
words to say, you should say nothing more at all”
as their slogan, is
suddenly released in an epic explosion of drums
and guitar.
This single does make the next album's release
very exciting. It's rare
to find a second album following on well from
a first, especially one as
popular as the Maccabees, but I have faith. We've
got a maturer sound,
and we're on to something.
The only let down? No b-sides. Boo.
5/5
