Sikth first formed in 2000 and ever since, their music has been under
the scope of music magazines such as Kerrang and Metal Hammer as well
as being a favourite of one of Radio One’s DJ’s, Mary Anne
Hobbs. Their style of music is extreme and is beyond classification. They
have self described their music as ‘noisecore’ which is often
labelled ‘weirdcore’.
Death of a Dead Day is Sikth’s second studio album following up
to 2003’s ‘The Trees are Dead and Dried Out, Wait for something
Wild’. The album was released in the UK in late June 2006 after
performing at Download Festival. They also headlined alongside Hondo Maclean
and many other bands in July 2006 at the Collision Course Festival in
Bridgend and Yeovil. Death of a Dead Day was produced by the band themselves
in Miami, Florida and has been released via Bieler Bros Records.
‘Bland Street Bloom’ is the first track on the album and
begins with echoing voices, which build into a series of strange sounds
and complex guitar riffs with very fast shouting. The chorus then goes
much mellower with the voices from the beginning making it much smoother
sounding than the erratic verses. Towards the end, there is an ongoing
chant like effect and fast discordant guitar sounds moving by step, this
track contains some very impressive guitar work and is causing quite a
stir on myspace. Following on is ‘Flogging the Horses’ which
is a brand new number by Sikth and is in their typical style. It begins
quite disjointed and within seconds the texture is built up and immediately
launched into there fast, broken up style.
One of the songs, which stands out most to me is ‘In this Light’,
this song is mellow in every way, the vocals are soft and drone on, the
drumming is much softer and focus on the drums more rather than the cymbals,
the guitars are soft with a clean tone. However, the chorus picks up a
little but takes the element of keeping this song mellower yet incorporates
the bands atonal style as it still moves by steps in semitones.
‘Mermaid Slur’ is in the middle of the album and is one of
the most random things I have ever heard! It is a 47 second long spoken
piece with lyrics such as “are the seagulls hungry still”,
“did the kitten purr did the mermaid slur” and ends with “find
it hard in a fish finger, baked beans upon your plate its gotten late
again, why did the wilderness wait tonight, do you know the way out? (Do
you know the way out?”…Interesting!
‘Part of the Friction’ is another brand new number from Sikth
and it was originally called what the album is called, Death of a Dead
Day. This song sound much more positive sounding then most Sikth songs
as there music is normally quite depressing because of their atonality
and style. This song is much more commercial sounding and much more ‘radio
friendly’ than other songs by Sikth. Following on is ‘ Where
Do We Fall’. This song starts with some soft string sounds, which
build up into a really great thumping riff followed by some mellower singing
with subtle guitar melodies underpinning the song. The vocals are not
typical of their style and could almost be a little Lostprophets-esque!
This song is a major contrast between the rest of the album as it is much
more tuneful and melodic.
Final track ‘As The Earth Spins Around’ is a great ending
to the album as it is a musical summary of the bands original style. Overall
this album is full of pure talent. It contains the tapping guitar parts
which is one of Sikth’s signature blue prints, it contains particular
phrases and time signatures which are constantly being developed, there
are heavy grooves with some very intense sections. Their style is a fusion
of many influences blended together seamlessly which makes their style
complex and challenging and is enjoyed by both educated musicians as well
as the average fan. Every member displays unreal musical talent and originality
completely effortlessly within this album, each member also has a crucial
role within the album yet it is not obvious; their music is subtlely crafted
yet has an extreme outcome. It is a brilliant album, which takes some
getting into, but once you are into it, you will love it.
