Broadway Calls are three young lads from Rainier,
Oregon who write and perform pure honest poppy punk
music and they seem to really enjoy everything about
being in a band which I am sure you will see for
yourselves if you give their self titled album a
listen as its one fun upbeat album from start to
finish.
I have had the self titled Broadway Calls album
for just under a week now and its constantly been
spinning in my CD player or blasting out of my
ITunes account pretty much nonstop, if you know
me you will know punk has always been my number
one genre of music and that I have a real soft
spot for the poppier side of punk bands like Green
Day, Blink 182, Less Than Jake, 4FT Fingers, Allister,
Home Grown, New Found Glory and so many more and
this is why I love the self titled album from
Broadway Calls so much as they are clearly influenced
by all the bands I have just mentioned, well apart
from 4FT Fingers as I doubt they have ever come
across them because they never broke out of the
UK underground, but anyway they share the same
love and passion.
The self titled Broadway Calls album features
14 tracks and runs just into the 40minute mark,
and it is a blast from start to finish, I will
say the first half of the album is really strong
where every song proper kicks arse in a fast paced
melodic way, whilst the later part of the album
loses the fast pace in places and does feature
a few tracks that sound more filler than killer
but that’s not a problem whatsoever especially
when you hear how good the strong tracks are.
The album starts off with ‘Call It Off’
and the track is fan-fucking-tastic, it’s
a proper full on sing-a-long track with one big
catchy chorus that will stick in your head for
a very long time, seriously try listen to the
ever so catchy lyrics of "we hit the switch
and call off all executions, call off all celebrations,
this is the last song written" and not sing-a-long,
remember any lyrics or dance like a Looney, its
high on impossible and that’s because the
Broadway Calls guys have an art for writing fast
melodic songs.
Other highlights from the album have to be ‘Back
To Oregon’ and ‘Suffer The Kids’.
On ‘Back To Oregon’ the drumming is
well impressive with Josh Baird nailing every
hit with perfection and packing such a big noise,
Ty Vaughn’s vocals are come across a lot
more rawer on this song than any other song on
the album and that’s the main reason why
it stands out so much to me, but at the same time
the song is another catchy slice of poppy punk.
As for ‘Suffer The Kids’ you can’t
help but love the song, it is such a fast paced
guitar driven song with some bouncy bass lines
and before the song finishes you will find yourself
singing along to the catchy lyrics of “We’ve
got a war on terror, a war on drugs, a war on
women, and a war on love, Oh No”, the song
is well written and you can clearly see that just
by reading some of the lyrics.
The album isn’t all poppy punk music, there
is actually a diverse set of songs that pop up
towards the later part of the album, for example
there is the acoustic starting ‘Save Our
Ship’ which does so much for me with the
way it starts off as a slow acoustic song and
then towards the middle the rest of the band come
in to finish the song in a powerful rocking way.
There is another acoustic song called ‘Meet
Me At Washington Park’ and also a cover
of the classic song from The Smiths called ‘A
Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours’ which
is very different from the original and remind
me of the old UK based band Whitmore.
Something I have to mention is that the opening
to ‘Classless Reunion’ really reminds
of the opening to ‘Goodbye Forever’
from Alkaline Trio, and the only reason I notice
this is because Alkaline Trio are my favourite
band in the world and I would always notice something
that sounds so similar to their music, if you
listen to both songs at the same time you will
notice the introductions are slightly different
but so similar at the same time.
If you love the early music from bands such as
Green Day and Blink 182 then Broadway Calls are
a band that you really need to listen to now as
their debut full length studio album is crammed
full of power-pop-punk songs and it has a big
lasting feel about it, the band have just signed
to Sideonedummy records and are currently working
on album number two which I personally can’t
wait for.
