Protest The Hero are a five-piece band from Whitby, Ontario, Canada and
have been together for five years and each band member is only nineteen
years old now.
'Kezia' is the bands first full length release and is similar to a concept
album as it tells a story of a young woman’s execution, chronicled
from the perspective of three characters and each character is designated
a section containing three songs, with a single retrospective finale concluding
the album. The three characters represent an aspect of the band-members
themselves, creating a deeply personal album.
When I first got this cd I was expecting it to be a pure emo band but
when I first put it on it blew me away as they musically sound like a
heavier version of Dragonforce with some emo vocals thrown in for good
measures, this may seem pretty odd but it actually works very well.
The album starts with act one which is a story about the prison priest
and opens up with the first track 'No Stars Over Bethlehem' and as the
song starts up you’re introduced to Dragonforce style sounds and
thumping drums throughout. Track two, 'Heretics And Killers' starts up
with some killer guitar riffs and heavy drum beats for thirty seconds.
Following this is some mellow vocals before a mixture of death metal and
emo vocals take over making this song very varied and well put together.
Act one finishes with 'Divinity Within’, which features more Dragonforce
style sounds throughout and finishes the act off nicely.
Act two tells the story of the executioner / prison guard and starts
off with a little piano intro to separate the two acts and then goes straight
into 'Bury The Hatchet' which is a pure metal song very fast with heavy
guitar riffs, blasting drums and pounding bass sounds and Rody Walkers
vocals are awesome with loads of screams, the lyrics are very brutal as
well. Track two of act two 'Nautical' kicks in fast and furious and has
a mixture of fast punk vocals and hardcore screams throughout. The finishing
track to act two is 'Blindfolds Aside' which happens to be the first single
taken from the album and is a good song which is not to fast and not to
heavy and filled with a good mixture of vocals throughout and features
some stunning guitar work, the song finishes off with Rody and a guest
female singer singing "a sin I didn't care for, but a sin that paid
my debts. A sin that fed my children and burned my smiles and cigarettes"
then the music slowly fades out.
Act three tells the story of Kezia, the girl whose to be executed. This
act starts off 'She Who Mars The Skin Of Gods' which is a good track and
features some loud heavy drumming and fast vocals throughout which are
almost catchy in places. Next up is 'Turn Soonest To The Sea' which happens
to be my favourite track on the album. It starts off pretty heavy and
mid way through features shouty vocals of "Your flesh means more
than you" which then follows on with some mellow vocals which finishes
off with a massive sing along; stunning stuff. This act finishes off with
a little intro of someone saying "Ready....Aim" and then goes
straight into 'The Divine Suicide Of K' which is another well put together
track and the guitars are as good as they have been throughout the whole
album. The drumming is at its heaviest, the vocals are good and the mixture
of female and male vocals on this song works really well.
The album finishes with 'A Plateful Of Our Dead' and is a truly well
put together song as it starts off fast and heavy but also features slow
and mellow parts a great finish to a stunning album.
Overall I love this band and can’t get enough of this album its
so cleverly put together and stunning great musically and lyrically. Protest
The Hero have a great future especially considering the band starting
writing this album when they were only seventeen im sure the best is still
to come. You must buy this album.
