Frank Iero is best known for being the guitarist
and backing vocalist for My Chemical Romance, a
band who which has gone from strength to strength
since they formed back in 2001, but it was during
2006 when the band started to get extremely popular
with the release of their third studio album ‘The
Black Parade’ the album debuted at number
10 in the official UK album chart, and from that
moment the band got more and more popular by the
day with even the major newspapers such as The Sun,
The Mirror and The Times writing about the band,
some articles were positive and some were negative
but they all added up to extra publicity for the
band.
My Chemical Romance toured the album for pretty
much two years non-stop every show was a sell, the
headlined many major festivals during their hectic
touring schedule, they had the biggest mixed fan
base that I have seen a band have for a long time,
there was the long term hardcore fans, and then
there was the new generation of fans which was mainly
made up of 14 to 16 year olds and their mums, with
many getting into the band because they fancied
the band members more than they liked the music,
My Chemical Romance got bigger than expected, some
of their fans became more obsessive than ever and
the band needed a well deserved long break which
brings us to Leathermouth.
Leathermouth is Frank Iero’s side project,
the band actually formed back in 2007 and was made
up of some of Frank’s friends, but when the
bands former singer failed to write any lyrics for
the band, Frank Iero joined the band and now they
are ready to take off with their debut album, ‘XO’
just around the corner.
If you think Leathermouth are going to be anything
like My Chemical Romance then you are going to be
deeply shocked and maybe disappointed as the band
are so different and much heavier. Frank Iero claims
that being the lead singer in Leathermouth means
he can vent about all the bullshit that he see’s
going on in the world, he originally wanted to keep
his Leathermouth project anonymous but now he doesn’t
care as the world is going to shit and he has things
to get of his chest.
The best way to describe ‘XO’ the debut
album from Leathermouth is a short 25minute, 10
track, fast and furious aggressive ride to hell
and back, think of the aggressiveness from the last
From Autumn To Ashes album, think of the big arrangements
and frantic sound of the Cancer Bats, Leathermouth
are so similar to both bands but at the same time
pack their own big fuck off punch.
‘Xo’ opens with ‘5th Period Massacre’
, the song runs for 2minutes and 20 seconds and
smashes you into Leathermouth in a nice, quick aggressive
way, Frank Iero has a great set of vocals and really
knows how to scream and shout his way around a song.
‘Catch Me If You Can’ starts off with
the good old Motorhead ‘Ace Of Spades’
riff which was nicely borrowed and then Frank Iero
goes on a mad rant before taking a slight breather
after shouting ‘Get A Fucking Life’
half way through the song, then the song starts
to build up again.
The introduction to ‘This Song is About Being
Attacked By Monsters’ is amazing, its straight
up aggressive punk, the lyrics are straight to the
point, the vocals are fuelled with aggression and
the song has a slight MCR feel about it towards
the end.
Some of the song titles on the album are quite
interesting for example there is ‘Your Friends
Are Full of Shit’, ‘Murder Was The
Case That They Gave Me’, and even ‘I
Am Going To Kill The President Of The United States
Of America’ now not many bands can get away
with a song title like that, but Leathermouth
do and the song happens to be one of the best
songs on the album and oddly the only song that
runs into the 3minute mark.
You will find yourself listening to ‘XO’
time and time again due to the fact that the album
is so short and also because it is so damn listenable
you just won’t be able to get enough of
these guys
I think Leathermouth are ace, the hardcore scene
can never have too many bands, and bands like
Leathermouth are well welcomed, they show influences
of other bands from the same scene but also have
their own unique sound. You can spot bands like
the Gallows from a mile off just by hearing a
few seconds of Frank Carter’s vocals you
can spot The Cancer Bats within seconds of hearing
the crunching metal style guitar riffs and you
can spot a Leathermouth song as soon as Frank
Iero screams his bollocks off.
I would catch Leathermouth at their next live
show in your town as I can’t see them on
tour for long as the regrouping of My Chemical
Romance is just around the corner.
5/5
