Dashboard Confessional have spent the past two years writing and recording
there fourth studio album for Vagrant Records titled 'Dusk And Summer'
which is a follow up to the bands million selling record 'A Mark, A Mission,
A Brand, A scar'.
The band chose to work with producer 'Don Gilmore' on this record who
the band worked with last on 'Vindicated', a song which featured on the
Spider Man 2 soundtrack and also features on 'Dusk and Summer' as a bonus
track.
The album starts off with lead single, 'Don’t Wait which is an excellent
song, a good opener and is very much a guitar driven song. Chris Carrabba's
vocals sound great on this song but he has the kind of voice you either
love or hate. On 'Reason To Believe' the band pick up the pace a bit and
rock out a lot more. 'The Secret's In The Telling' is one of my favourite
tracks on the album and is a song about imperfect love and Carrabba's
vocals sound at there best on this track and the lyrics are really well
written.
'Stolen' is a really mellow track and probably the quietest track on the
album. 'So Long, So Long' features Counting Crows vocalist Adam Duritz
providing guest vocals the song also features a mixture of violins and
piano which makes this song sound nothing like anything Dashboard Confessional
have done before. The songs ok but sounds very over produced and im sure
hardcore DC fans will be dissapointed. 'Slow Decay' is a great song and
is about a young lad who has just returned from doing duty and is something
a lot of people can relate to with the many war situations going on in
the world recently. Carrabba’s vocals are very strong in this song
which goes well with the songs overall theme.
Album title track 'Dusk and Summer' is very mellow and is driven with
an acoustic guitar from start to finish and Carrabba gets to express himself
very well with his vocals which really shine when he sings, "But
you've already lost". The album finishes with 'Heaven Here' which
is the heaviest track on the album and has a mixture of chimes and synth-violins
a very produced song.
There is a bonus track on the album which is a song called 'Vindicated'
which is a song that was written for and appeared on the Spider Man 2
original soundtrack and happens to be the best track on the album and
the most rockiest as well. It’s a shame that the other songs on
the album weren’t as good as this.
Overall the band are more mature now and this album is a well produced
pop-rock album filled with huge choruses but it cant be a good thing when
the best track on the album is a bonus track that was written some time
ago can it?
3/5
