The Kills mk II? It's a girl and a guy, it's guitar
drums and vocal, and
it's minimal, or at least for the first track. Points
for innovation? Nil.
The second however, “Lovesick,” features
the female vocal as the lead
instead of the first's male, and fits together
much better as a complete
song. You can't tell it's a two-piece, and you
aren't too busy thinking
how much they sound like the Kills. This, I'd
say is closer to the sound
of Metric.
And “Fort Wayne,” what's all this
about? Another shift in sound
altogether, with an airy-fairy twinkly acoustic
number, more like that
of Loney, Dear.
“Seeing Stars” is vaguely Zero 7-esque.
This is getting crazy. The
genre-spanning couplet are making my head hurt.
But in a strangely good
way. You can listen through this whole album without
the fear of getting
bored, it's the same as putting your iTunes on
shuffle, really. And
given that it's all pretty good (though it won't
make you want to jump
around,) we have ourselves a decent release. Without
listening to this
CD, it's probably impossible to comprehend how
much each song can sound
so different, so I guess that means you'll just
have to go out and buy
it? Go on, I would.
Grand Duchy are a deceptively interesting band,
and despite the initial
“oh look it's the Kills” attitude,
they've pulled through and come out
with flying colours.
4/5
