I’ve never been a huge fan of live albums.
They always seem a bit superfluous, created just
to rake in more money for the band by preying on
their hardcore fans, who have to own everything
they’ve ever released. But I might have to
change my opinion on the matter after listening
to Thrice’s latest offering – Live at
the House of Blues.
I must admit I’ve never given Thrice a
proper listen, but I was pleasantly surprised
by their intricate and well written tracks. Of
course, they’re hardly new; with 6 studio
albums and 6 EPs to their name, they’ve
gathered their fair share of fans. And it is those
people for which this album was created. But even
for us newcomers, this is a fantastic introduction
to their music. The most satisfying thing about
the album is being able to hear the energy of
the live concert, and listen to the appreciative
fans cheering and clapping and singing along in
their thousands. Inevitably, it doesn’t
sound perfect, because it’s live, but the
atmosphere is electric and if you close your eyes
you could imagine you were there yourself.
Recorded at the House Of Blues in Anaheim, California,
the double CD album boasts an impressive 25 tracks
and a bonus DVD with an exclusive interview and
backstage footage. Although I was only given a
10 track sampler to listen to, there seemed to
be a good variety of tracks, ranging from upbeat
to slow sing-a-longs to heavier pieces. The highlights
include the heavy but careful and intricate ‘Silhouette’
and the gorgeous guitars of ‘Daedalus’,
in a similar vein to Explosions In The Sky. For
audience anticipation, my favourite has to be
‘Come All You Weary’; you can almost
see the lighters swaying from side to side.
Certainly a must for any die-hard fan of the
American rockers, but also a great way to get
started in the world of Thrice.
5/5
